Hi all,
do these cars have semi-easily replaceable fuel filters? I've been searching the parts diagrams and looking through VIDA for info on how to change the fuel filter and can't find anything. My car is a 2008 so it's basically 10 years old now and has 275k kms/170k miles on it - maybe time to change whatever it's been using to filter the fuel?
fuel filter?
I spoke with an indy volvo mechanic I am friendly with and he said there is no replaceable filter - it's built in to the pump assembly. So 'replacing' it would mean dropping the fuel tank for one thing, which is a bit of work (!!). Also it essentially means that replacing the fuel filter means replacing the fuel pump/assembly, or at least removing it. He also told me that lots of makes are doing this now.
Seems ridiculous to me but what do I know!

It really seems like manufacturers are trying to force ALL independent repair shops out of business, and proactively prevent ANY shade-tree repair work... so you've got two choices and two choices only, go to the dealer and pay $150 for a $2 lightbulb, or go to the dealer and replace the car.
If they could actually make it illegal to work on your own car, they surely would.
Just look at what they've done to the VIDA subscriptions in response to Right-to-Repair - they've made it a cloud app that can never be hacked to run without a subscription, and they charge $140 for a 3-day license. Clearly, the idea is to make it just as expensive as going to the dealer.

I have this non serviceable fuel filter on my 2003. The filter itself is a long filtering band rolled several times, so it should be good for a very long time, such as a few hundred thousands miles. There is also a mesh before the filter itself which should be catching larger debris. You can very well keep the fuel pump and replace only the assembly with the filter housing.
In doubt, check the fuel pressure

A P2 fuel filter is EASILY replaceable. You are incorrect, where did you come up with that one?
It's right behind the RR wheel
Should be replaced every 100K or so

Not all P2 have the serviceable filter. The non turbos were first to lose it and then almost all P3 have non serviceable. The P3 with serviceable ones have it inside tank with a strap over it and you have to get bathed in fuel to change it.
Fuel filter changeing became mostly unnecessary starting with P2. The strainer on pump is a fine particle and water resistive filter and becomes the primary filter. The upstream filter is finer particle to catch wear particles from fuel pump. The upstream will now last until the fuel pump craps out and dumps stuff into filter. The filter is made with fuel pump since you are going to need to change them both anyway.
My cars is running rough so it needs a fuel filter was never valid anyway.
