Tie rod end replacement

Hi folks,

I took my car to the dealer for the yearly inspection, among some other small things, they told me I have to replace the right inner tierod end # 274353.
Now, I replaced the exact same part one year ago (TRW), therefore I am suspicious.
Also, they say I need wheel alignment ($90.00) which I also did last year for the same reason.

What do you suggest? I can certainly look at it myself ....
Is the wheel alignment really necessary?

As far as I am concerned, the steering wheel works perfectly, I feel no movement at all.

You should be able to replace an outer tie rod end and maintain front end alignment if it isn't too loose, but an inner is probably not going to seat exactly in the same place. They should last longer than a year.

This is how I check the geometry to get an idea. It is not perfect, but the 'accuracy' is enough to keep uniform tire wear

Welcome also into the amazing world of terrible aftermarket replacement parts. I'd take a moment to check on this forum about which aftermarket parts are recommended and which not. As for TRW I just google it

It is easy to look at the tire rod, grab it by hand and move to feel for play, or see if the small dust boot is ripped.

You won't be able to get exact same toe-in after replacing tie rod end. Unless you have something like Trackace laser gauge (costs slightly more than alignment procedure at dealer, or maybe less, depending on where you are). Or if you dare to use fishing line and precise sub-millimeter ruler, though it's not easy on XC because of difference in front and rear track.

Trackace for front axle is perfect.

I will verify if the tie inner rod is gone, but the real question is: what to buy aftermarket?
I will check where the TRW I have comes from but really, I do not know what else to buy.

Who is Volvo OEM for tie rods?

I wouldn't`t be surprised if he heard a click in the are were the inner tie rod connects to the rack. It is the gear lash being taken up on the steering rack. Have someone turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn back and force and put your head down in that area to listen. Can`t remember if tires should be off the ground or not
