Heater Core replacement complications

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Heater Core replacement complications

Post by BryanM53 »

Hello All,

First thank you all for posting your fixes and DIYs on various parts of the S80. It has helped tremendously with all the repairs I've had to endure on this car (just me or does this car require a lot of attention!?).

I recently removed my heater core due to it leaking huge amount of coolant into my Cabin (carpet was soaked thoroughly). unfortunately I skipped the part where i needed to turn on the heat to move those plastic temperature control arms that just barely get in the way of the core coming out... Does anyone have a part number for that? I accidentally snapped it in two on the way out.

The Picture attached is not mine, i'm borrowing it from: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=41259

They have a very detailed process on how to replace the core, however I didnt see it till after I broke that same piece. I'd Rather not glue it back together...

A part number would help tremendously! If not, I'll probably just glue it... any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Bryan

also, I'm prepping myself for the worst, after I detached the two pipes, while moving them to the side to pull the core out, I heard a light snapping noise and one of those pipes became very loose.... this gunna be a problem, or maybe just hopefully it only snapped a ziptie that holds it in place??

http://www.volvopartssource.com/ and http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/ are two of many dealer webpages with interactive parts pages. You can view the parts and sorta see the way things go. You might find another mount that may have broken, or you may find more work :x
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Thanks FLXC90! these websites are awesome! after a few minutes of searching I was able to find exactly the part I need.

In case anyone should ever stumble upon this same problem its part number is 9171544
taken from: http://www.volvopartssource.com/a/Volvo ... 20075.html

I confirmed it by searching it online.

Of course the price itself may force me to just glue the expensive little piece back together with super glue, prayers and dreams!

Thanks again FLXC90, I pray i don't find another tough fix waiting for me!!!

Rather than superglue you might want to go for a two-part epoxy.

Thanks Cees, I did try to do that, however I ended up breaking it even more lol. Opted to just leave the vent closed.

Another issue that has come up now (heater core successfully replaced!) Is that now my car won't shift out of park. I did replace the brake switch with a new one because of a check engine light on the first one. Engine light is gone now, but I can't switch out of park now. Any ideas? Currently breaking down center console to check the solenoid.

Ok, figured it out.
For future reference if anyone encounters the problems I had, I will list them out and the solutions to them.
1. While removing heater core, the control mechanism broke in two. Had I removed it prior to trying to take the heater core out, I would have avoided a headache.
- to remove the mechanism, you first take off the actuator that moves it. two Torx screws (not sure of the size, maybe 25). after you move it to the side, the mechanism is held in by a few push sections. careful not to put any pressure on the actual joints that move, since this thing is really fragile.

2. I took the path of moving my steering column out of the way, it actually isn't too hard, however, when you put it back in place, make sure all the wires near the key port are snapped back into place (caused problems later).
-an easy step-by-step that I followed was again taken from viewtopic.php?t=41259.

3. for those infernal clips/o-rings that won't go back in.
- I ended up doing as many others have stated, I put the o-rings in place, then pushed the pipe in as much as possible. Next step i took was a bit risky, but worked for me. there is a potential to damage your pipes leading to an even bigger headache.
I positioned and held the clips with needle nose pliers, then with a flat head screwdriver, I pushed on the pipes edge (part where the clips will eventually hold it. little by little i pushed around unit the clips were all the way in. I kept thinking i would chip and brake a hole in those pipes if I applied too much pressure (if that happened, I would have bypassed the core entirely!).

4. After finally reassembling and adding coolant/ensuring there were no more leaks, I filled it up, and tried to take it out on a test drive. Unfortunately at this point the car would not go out of Parking.
-After removing the center console and messing with the shifter to figure out how it worked, a familiar looking cable kept allowing me to shift when I pulled it. Not sure what the cable was, but I backtracked on my work and found the same cable going up and behind my steering dashboard. I jiggled it a little back and forth and head a snap (the good kind, when you hear something locking into place). After that the car shifted like it should!

hope this helps someone! any questions just post and I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread and to other threads I looked at for support!
