Turbo control solenoid compatibility question.

Post by rguzz »

Can I replace my 96 old style TCV (solenoid to the turbo) with a Pierburg TCV from a later model, i.e. a 98 style turbo control solenoid. I doubt it, but thought I'd ask, thanks.

You'd need to check the wiring connector is compatible, and possibly cut the wiring feed and TCV from a newer car. I can't recall if the pipes are the same, but I think IPD sells their TCV which is compatible with older cars:

https://www.ipdusa.com/products/8901/12 ... 70-v70-c70

So that is this fits, it would suggest the newer style would also, but I can't guarantee it.

I get these TCV's in Canada from PnP for about $5-7 if I recall.

These parts do fail with age and become sticky and may not supply full boost, but a used one would confirm all is possible without paying for a new one.

Haven't been able to find any of the older ones around. I strongly suspect my original is tired and needs refreshing. Will take a look at an incoming Volvo (98XC) at the Pic-n-pull and maybe pull that stuff out and look at it.

It is sometimes luck what comes into our local junkyards (2 x PnP). One seems to get more Volvos than the other one. I also prefer that yard as it is smaller and has a great staff. If it wasn't so expensive to ship stuff I could send you one of my many Volvo newer Volvo TCV's to try. I run an IPD TCV as Volvo ones are only good to about 12 psi before becoming flakey, and my car is running around 18 psi.

Let us know how you get on.

Check under the hood of your car there should be a sticker with the vacuum pipe routing. You could check it with the installation instructions IPD have on their web-site for their TCV I gave above. You could compare the pipe routing of the 3 pipes and see if they compare. I am confident they will.

The connectors are definitely the same and I have read about people doing that swap (TCV for the BCS) many times, though I have never tried it. Should be fine.

Consider this, for example: You can swap the ECU from a 98 into a 96 and the BCS does just fine. Under the hood the 98 is barely different from a 96-98 850, including the wiring harness.

I have also read that the 850 BCS is more hardy than the 98 + TCV. I don't know at all if that's true, just saying ...

Relevant update:

I was having issues with the IPD tcv not being responsive enough and began looking for alternatives. I read about people replacing it with differnet tcv's from other cars... so I decided to order a modern Volvo TCV - Pierburg Volvo PN 9465528.
The connector is the same, the ports are labled in red/blue/yellow and work exatly the same. My car is a '95 850 T5-R.
Since I replaced it the car is much more responsive and not so laggy.
Note: you may need to build something to mount it and the hose diameter is smaller than on the IPD one.

IMO: IPD Tcv is not as good as a new pierburg which is also cheaper.

do you have the older ipd valve with the brass nipples or the newer one with the plastic nipples?

It has the black plastic nipples, I think the newer one.
I also extended the cable so I could mount it nearer to the turbo (shorter hoses). (The IPD valve already has a longer cable connection)

Wouldn't say it is junk, but it is not as good as they say.
Maybe still better than the original one from '95.

I doubt mine is bad due to old age, i don't have it that long.
