Message: "Try slow down or shift up"

Post by Faust »

'04 V70 N/A. Long, I'll try to be short. I lost my key, after 9 days stealer found time to make a key. To get the car there, I had it flat bedded. Tow guy lifted plate and around the shifter and freed it from park, I didn't watch all of this. Took about 30 seconds. Dealer cut a new key and programmed it. When I started it, it seemed a little rough. Drove away and it shifted normally up through 3rd (?) gear. Immediately hopped on 95 and found that it topped out at about 40 mph with tach at about 3500. Got off an found myself topping out at about 15 mph with tach over 3000. Got back to dealer. they denied any responsibility and claimed it was fault of tow driver. I thought this marginally possible, but was upset enough to just leave. Got it home at about 30 mph. If I stop and restart, it shifts up to about 3rd. I lifted the plate around the shifter but I don't see much. All the while I was getting the message in the header. Any thoughts?

Along with the message quoted above, I get a flashing CEL. I have had a steady CEL for a while, codes seem to indicate bad O2 sensor.

Read through the link above. I noted "running rough", probably better to say "misfiring". Still, it doesn't shift up. Tomorrow in day light, I will check my coils.

Just took it out for a run. Behaves fairly normally for about 2 minutes, then if I let slow to about 20 mph, it wants to stay there, tach will run up to about 4K without shifting. Stop and re-start restores "normalcy" for another 2 minutes, or so. Seems to be improving, but I am not betting on it and message does not go away.

I don't have anything to pull codes. Taking it to my indie tomorrow. I have pretty much discounted dealer's story that tow guy caused it by getting it out of "Park".

On advice, I've put about 50 miles on the car. Shifting is returning to normal, still misfires but less noticeable. After about 40 miles, it did slow down to about 10 mph. I pulled to the side of the road, shut it off, restarted and got back to approximately normal. Still poor acceleration. I think some errant software sneaked in when they were programming the new key. Oh, now that I bought a new key, the old one turned up, Fortunate that I told them not to erase all older keys. I was hoping old key would restore normal operation, no luck.

2001 thru 2004 models are known to overheating CEM, central electronics module. Our 2004 XC70 randomly went into limp mode with many failure alarms on DIM. Set many codes. Sent CEM to XeMODeX for repair.

Perhaps disconnect battery and let disconnected for 1/2 hour. Reconnect per Volvo sequence, key in position 2. see http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... to-replace
