2000 V70R - AWD 5-speed auto trans oil level

Post by scot850 »

My car has the 5 speed auto trans and up until now I have not needed to check the oil level of the trans as it has been drained/filled twice in the last couple of years and about 4kkmx.

I now have to replace the radiator as it has failed, and that is a job I have done before, but as it will be almost impossible not to spill the trans oil from the radiator cooler when removing the rad, how do I find how much oil I need to replace as the trans has no dipstick that I can see. Also I can't find out how to check the oil level even when not having to do this.

I could see that I can try to minimise the loss when removing the oil cooler lines, and possibly be able to re-fill the trans cooler in the new radiator by using a nozzle or pipe and filler cone and filling until it leaks from the top where the top pipe fits. Surely there is another correct way to do this.

Thanks,

Neil.

Your dipstick is under the lower rad hose where it drops beside trans front sump pan. Move the hose to the side and you'll see dipstick.

Thanks jimmy57. I remembered I had photos of the spare transmission I took some time ago, and sure enough there in one of the pictures you can see the dipstick. Where/how do you fill this trans with oil? Through the dipstick as in the 4 speed?

Yes, through the dipstick. Getting the levels right isn't much fun on that 5 speed...

So true: a PITA-mobile for sure. I have one; if you'd care to swap stories and info, that might be very helpful. Right now I'm trying to find out if the two vacuum lines from the vacuum solenoid for the turbo (TCV), going to wastegate and boost (?) diaphragms, should hold a vacuum. If so, then I have a shot black hose and/or boost diaphragm.

I think the level must be read on a really warmed up transmission at 80C. Slightest variation in temp causes a large change on the dipstick. There's also a cold mark I've heard mechanics use on a customers car with cold engine so they can check there's minimum oil to start the car, but it still must be checked at full warm idling and very level.

You are right on that. On the turbo engine you need Teflon hands to reach the dip-stick where it is hidden. I now have a 2000 V70 NA with the 5 speed auto and it is relatively easy to access as there is none of the intercooler or intake pipework in the way.
