I have a 2000 s80 with 105,000 miles, that has the service light on, my wife called the dealer to see what needs to be done to remove the light or how much it costs to get serviced, the repair man stated that the timing belt needs to be adjusted and that it would cost around $750, First, what's covered when my vehicle needs to be serviced, and should it cost that much? thanks for your response.

105,000 miles is the magic number for the factory recommended replacement (not adjustment ?!?) of the timing belt. Per the recommendation, the timing belt tensioner and idler pulley should also be replaced at that time.

The service light came on due to the mileage interval pre-set. The dealer can turn it off, or you can find the do-it-yourself procedure in the forum.

As for what you get for the $750 dealer charge, I would like to think you would receiveda complete 105k mile maintenance service, including the timing belt service described above, for that price. That may be wishful thinking. Of course, only the dealer can tell you what they will do. My experience with the Volvo dealer has not been pleasant, as their charges (for everything) are astronomical. Sometimes a good independent servicer is the better choice. Best of luck...

Thanks for your response, I actually found an independant servicer that's only going to charge me $250 for replacing the timing belt.
