Fuel pump

Hi all.
Hope you can help.
I have a volvo s80 D5 2004.
I have had the infamous fuel guage problems.
Long story short my guage was reading a quarter full and I was running out of fuel.
Fuel sender was replaced by mechanic.
Now the guage doesn't work at all.
Also miles remaining are just 3 dashes.
Car starts and runs regardless.
Other thing of note.
The fuel pump noise lasts up to a minuite before going quiet.
Fuel sender contacts look sound and clean.
Not got to removing fuel pump as yet.

Any ideas?
It's driving me nuts.
