1998 V70 AWD failed driveshaft?

Post by cmblackburn »

Hey all!
We took the new to me '98 V70 AWD with 133k camping this weekend. It did great until it didn't- I think the angle gear or CSB may have failed. Before I go yanking the driveshaft, I want to know some opinions as I would like to keep this car AWD.
So, the car makes a very metallic grinding noise when I am not accelerating or turning right. Left turns make it worse.
I put new brakes on all 4 corners a couple weeks ago and noticed DS outer CV boot was torn all the way around and will be replacing that axle soon- but could the axle be the noise?
Can I replace the CSB myself if that is the problem?
The kicker is, the AWD still seems to work. When we got it home, I took it up a muddy hill. Rear wheels engaged properly and made it up just fine. e
I have little experience with the pre-haldex AWD, so any advice is much appreciated :)

Ah, the classic AWD problems. In this case it may well not be the AWD system but as you suggest the LH front axle. If the boot is completely sp;it as you mention, then driving it is madness. Whereas you may have been able to repair the axle with a new boot from FCP Euro, now having driven it a long way on possibly un-paved roads will have allowed dirt and small gravel to get into what remains of the grease in the joint and act as a wonderful grinding paste. Repairing a relatively low mileage boot on an original Volvo axle is far better than using an after-market or re-manufactured axle as they can both be a crap shoot in terms of longevity, quality and balance.

I would suggest not using the car until the issue is resolved to prevent further damage.

If you think the issue could be the center support bearing (CSB?) then jack the car up and support it. Check for movement in the front bearing at the angle gear and the CSB and if found, remove it until it is repaired to prevent further damage. It is worth doing this physical check even if the issue is the front axle as a preventative check.

Neil.

Follow Neil's advice on the axle. There are many items that can make a metallic sound on these cars. Dust cover plates against the rotor, front motor mount, damaged support bracket that secures the driveshaft carrier bearing. On my AWD cars the driveshaft will start to make a rumbling sound as the shaft joints start to wear down over miles.

If you don't know the history of the DS, you might as well pull it anyway.
It will answer some noise questions and at it's age, it probably has a cooked
boot on the front CV that needs replacement. Get'er done! (Before Winter).

Somewhat related but my 2005 XC90 2.5T AWD sleeve just went south, classic sleeve problem (your problem is likely different, axle as scot850 suggested).

I just ignored the sleeve issue, why should I replace the sleeve to be failed again?
I have winter tires on my XC90 and things seem fine in the winter.
My XC90 AWD is now essentially a FWD vehicle, probably save some fuel mileage being FWD!

IIRC someone makes a reinforced collar for the P2's, but it may just be the M66 cars. They're a royal pain to replace though.
