Advice needed for rear deck speaker rattle

Hello,

When I first purchased my Volvo 850, I set about replacing the speakers throughout with spares I had sitting around. I haphazardly installed larger than stock 6x9 speakers in the plastic enclosures, which worked well enough for nearly two years. Recently, I've noticed a distinct rattle in the rear deck, and upon investigation, both of the plastic enclosures have cracked due to stress from bumps and the larger than stock speakers installed.

I'm wondering, has anyone has removed the plastic enclosures completely, and mounted the speakers to the deck directly with any success? I'd like to eliminate the rattle if possible, and continue to use the speakers I already have. Any advice is appreciated, and if needed, I can snap a few pictures of the damaged plastic enclosures.

I don't know if this is allowed, but, bump. Please, any advice or tutorials that exist would be greatly appreciated. I searched, but only came across guides for S70s.

I mounted 6x9s using a plywood spacer plate. Has been working like a charm for 6 years. I even managed to put the original grill over them. Bolting the speaker directly to the deck should work fine, just put felt or foam between the deck amd the speaker

Hi Clemens, is there anyway I could see a picture of your setup? I know you have a wagon, but just for a visual reference.

Dorvin, sorry, i was swamped at work this week. I tried to take a photo but it is useless because it only shows the rear speaker cover raised by a few mm above the original speaker bracket, the gap masked with black tape.
i think how I did it was that i pulled the whole speaker assembly, removed the cover, made a plywood bracket with the same size as the speaker cover where I cut the hole for the speaker out (the box of my Bostons had a template for cutting and drilling the correct holes). Then I screwed the speaker onto the plywood spacer, screwed the spacer to the old speaker mount and fixed the speaker cover with black tape. Took me about an hour or so. Very easy to do.
