Mobil 1 Question

Post by Marauder 1 »

OK I know that this has probable been beaten to death on ever forum but here goes, I purchased my 2001 Volvo V70 this month, I don't know the history on what type of oil was used in the service of the vehicle but since most of the service was done by Volvo according to the records I have I would assume they used the correct stuff. The oil looks clean now and was probably changed not to long ago.

I'm going to be doing my first oil change since I want to get the car on a fresh maintenance cycle that I can document. Since I don't know what oil was used I was wondering what Mobil 1 you guys would recommend. According to Mobil High mileage stuff will reduce sludge and deposits. But could running the high mileage stuff create issues? Or would it be better to simply go with the regular M1 5w-30 run that from here on out.
Thanks
Mark

Just run regular M1 if it doesn't leak, seep, or burn.

How many miles on it?

M1 0-40 is the best. 5-30 is fine and high mileage would a good option too, but really the 0-40 is their flagship product.

Thanks for the reply's, the car has 127.000 on her. She must have been a garage queen because she looks almost brand new. I've never run 0-40 before in any of my other cars. I'll have to check it out and see if it's available in my area off the shelf. I'm also looking at Filters I know Mann and Mahle are the preferred or an original Volvo filter, I might have to pick those up from IPD or one of the other online shops since I don't see them in my local parts house. Are there any other brands you guys use?

Thanks
Mark

I switched to synthetic on two cars with similar mileage. The oil filter got full very quickly, after a few hundreds of miles. I'd replace the filter only after 200 miles then again after another 2-300 miles.

I also run now 0W40 but the Castrol one, 0 because of cold winter days here, otherwise for milder climates I'd go with 5W40 or 10W40 synth. Excellent oil especially if the car is driven harder - revs frequently above 4-5000rpm

The owners manual recommends using either 5W30 or 10W30... for all driving conditions.

It also recommends 40wt oil in all but the coldest conditions.

M1 0w40 and I believe the Castrol 0w40 are on the light side for Xw40 oils, nearly a Xw30 in viscosity. Keep in mind that viscosity is a continuous scale and in fact varies quite a bit depending on conditions, so the classification into 5w30 vs 5w40 vs 10w30 vs 0w40 is pretty coarse and not terribly informative. That classification is based on kinematic viscosity, whereas dynamic viscosity is more applicable to performance in an engine and the dynamic viscosity of various oils can vary quite a bit from the traditional kinematic viscosity scales.

How you change just the filter? Doesn't the oil pour out when you unscrew the filter case?

Most of the oil is in the bottom of the oil pan. You'll lose only about 1/2 qt when you remove the filter.

I was a fan of amsoil for a long time, but their prices keep creeping up. In my last car the additives/seal conditioners in that oil addressed worn stem seals quite nicely. But this Volvo with less than 100k doesn't have these sorts of problems. Maybe 10+ or more years ago Amsoil was one of the best group 4 synthetics when I started using it. But I looked at some more recent independent testing (not Amsoil marketing, which interestingly omits data on several, likely better, competing premium oils). It would appear a few of the other brands have caught up and probably surpassed Amsoil on their premium synthetic products for about half the price. I switched to Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W-30 on my last change (also a good group 4 base). Film strength and thermal breakdown resistance is off the charts compared to many other popular synthetics. Might be the best thing going at the moment--for $25/5-qt jug!
