Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Clutched Altenator

Post by Bazzer1234567 »

Hi, I am new on here and would like to seek some guidance if any knowledgable person would care to answer.

I have bought an S80 D3 2.0 litre...geartronic 2010 78k on clock recently. It had been previously had some serious work done to the engine as follows:

"the alternator pulley is clutched and had seized on this car. on checking with volvo this is a service part and should be changed when the timing and aux belts are done. This shredded the auxillary belt and it managed to get entangled in the timing belt.
The timing managed to jump a few teeth because of this.
This particular cylinder head has vertical valves and when the timing belt jumps teeth or breaks, instead of bending valves it pushes them straight up and they in turn crack the cast housings for the tappets in the cylinder head. this renders the head useless. i have had a new cylinder head fitted, from a 2012 car, with 54,000 miles, including valves, cams, tappets, followers, everything up top replaced. Whilst doing this work i have also had the timing belt, waterpump, timing belt tensioner and pulley replaced. i also replaced the auxillary belts and fitted an uprated tensioner for that also. all belts and tensioners are brand new"

I have been driving it for 2 months and the following has happened again....

The car cut out and wouldn't restart. The mechanic looked at it and noticed the belt has slipped off while driving. Still waiting for mechanic appraisal at this time but I was only doing 5 mph at time so hoping not too bad news.

In the middle of all this the fuel pump started leaking and had to be replaced (could not be repaired).

Any ideas why this has happened twice in 3-4 months. I am assuming it was done well the first time because it was driving like a ðream until second time...

Would really appreciate your feedback. Barry

I assume the the timing belt slipped? Then unfortunately at 5 mph or 50 mph there will be valve damage and the head will need to come off to see how much. If it`s the auxiliary ( surpentine ) belt only then it will not be that big of a deal, but the reason for it slipping off will need to be discovered. Usually the engine runs when only the auxiliary belt slips breaks though.

Thank you sir.

This was the second time in 4 months this has happened. It was originally repaired (new head, belts tensioner a etc) an I drove it for 3 months driving lovely...then fuel pump went in the engine and was replaced. Then 2 weeks later The same damage again!! Does a pump change effect the timing components in the engine?

I believe the fan belt slipped having a knock on effect on timing belt

Well, there is not a fan belt, but I think I get it.
