Bad vibrations in drivetrain

Post by shiloh51933 »

I know the hanger bearing on the rear driveshaft was on its way out but now the drivetrain is vibrating so bad I parked it. I was thinking I might have popped the cv axle out accidentally when I did both front hub bearings but everything is solid. I recently changed the bevel gear oil and that's it. I've never had this happens before. Any opinions appreciated?

Pull the drive shaft and see if things smooth out.

+1 to what Robert advised. Pull the drive shaft first and see what happens. Usual suspects are:

1) Angle gear is failing or coupling collar is damaged
2) Front prop-shaft bearing is failing )check for play). It sits near the cat so has a hard life.
3) Carrier bearing rubber mount has/is failing in middle of prop-shaft
4) Front bearing of the V/C is failing.

I appreciate your feedback, I have a question that you might have experience with. The front bearing of the V/C(angle gear), have you ever replaced the front bearing? If so then what was required to complete task?

The hanger bearing or carrier bearing has play and will actually tap under carriage making sharp turns with heavier throttle than usual.

I have had the bearing replaced on a 98 V70XC. I pulled the VC complete with casing and took it to the dealer and they had a b$%@#%D of a time getting the remains out. They said that when they undid the VC shaft nut at the bearing and removed it the ball bearings just fell out. They removed the VC from the casing and then had to use very long drifts to remove the outer bearing race. Re-installing wasn't as bad.

I disconnected the rear prop-shaft coupling from the VC, pulled the prop-shaft out of the way (you have to drop the center carrier bearing and some of the rear couplings are countersunk into the VC front flange).

I put a couple of bolts I had lying around into the threads on the VC front flange to allow me to prevent it rotating buy jamming the VC from rotating with a breaker bar locked into the 2 bolts on opposite quadrants of the flange. I used a hex headed stubby 6 or 7mm 3/8" drive socket and a wobble shaft to allow access to undo the 6 rear flange VC bolts to the rear differential, then undid the 4 casing bolts using long socket extenders to access the upper bolts. I undid the front VC casing mounting to allow it to drop to give more access.

This got the casing out, then it was easier to tackle on the bench. I believe it may be possible with the right pullers to pull the front bearing without removal of the casing, but if you damage the bearing you will have a bear of a time then trying to remove the VC unit.

Fell free to PM me if you need more help, but post the questions here for others to learn. The PM highlights in my e-mail to get back to MVS more quickly.

Good luck!

Never a problem for someone needing help! If I can help I do so!

Good luck, and if you are really stuck I have a fully VC unit and casing from a 97 850 AWD (Same unit as a 98 V70XC) kicking around in the garage taking up space. The driveline was good when pulled and has been stored on it's end which is the correct way to do it.

Thanks. The 98 VC is the same as the 2000? I use to have a 98 xc, my 2000 looks almost identical but lbw read that the AWD prop shaft changed a few times between 98-00.
So I was just under my 00 XC looking around and the front Prop Shaft CV Joint is really loose. I can push it up and down fairly easy, quite a bit of play and this is where I can feel all the vibration when with my hand on the center hump of interior when driving.

Yes the 99-00 had different front and rear flanges on the prop-shafts with different diameters of front flange and a different style on the rear prop=shaft and VC flange. The later VC to prop flange has a raised 'cup' that the rear flange of the prop sits into. The earlier one has a flat flange on the VC coupling:
97-98 VC flange style
97-98 VC flange style
99-00 VC flange style
99-00 VC flange style
The front bearing is usually the first to go, but watch the center carrier bearing rubber ring support around the center bearing. One the front starts failing it loads this and can tear it very quickly.

The heat from the cat hurts the front bearing and the muffler dries out the rubber ring on the center.

There are rumours that there were 3 prop-shaft versions over the 3 years of production of the P80 V70XC and AWD's but I have only ever seen 2 personally.

Actually I am wrong. The VC (clutch) units are different for -98 and 99-00. I learn every day from Vida!

Sorry to quote you again but when you say front bearing your referring to the bearing in the front CV joint correct?
The center carrier bearing was replaced by previous owner, he actually had receipts for all the work he had done, including the notorious electronic throttle body or throttle module as I believe Volvo calls it.
Of course I've checked everything and the center hanger bearing looks solid, I believe the rear CV joint was replaced but I check that also. I'm not driving her, she's parked until I repair.
