Windshield Leak - 2011 S80

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Windshield Leak - 2011 S80

Post by GDATL »

My wife's 2006 S800 3.2 was recently totaled - but she walked away, another testament to the Volvo's safe design. We replaced it with a 2011 S80 3.2. It has been a dry fall in Atlanta and the car is garaged, but with recent rains, we realized that there was a small leak at the top of the windshield (windscreen). I used compressed air to clean the drains around the windshield and sunroof and poured water over the windshield as a test. I saw no leak and thought that may have cleared the problem. The first rain proved me wrong! It is a slow leak, just an occasional drop will hit my hands on the steering wheel when driving or a small streak will appear on inside of the windshield.

Since I couldn't easily solve the problem, I asked my Volvo service tech when I had the car in for service. He reached inside, put a hand on the windshield and pushed up lightly and the entire windshield separated from the car! He said that the windshield was not bonded properly. (I don't know for certain if this is the original windshield, but I believe it is.) He referred me to a local glass shop for the repair and warned me that they might attempt to repair it or might need to replace the windshield.

Searching online, this is a common problem with several models: http://beranek.agrrmag.com/2015/04/volv ... ing-issue/

Would welcome any other thoughts or suggestions.

Local glass repair shop broke the windshield pulling it out for the repair. They indicated that they have had a 50/50 probability of breaking Volvo windshields when removing them for this repair (and apparently removing the windshield is the only way to complete the repair properly). However, the repair was completed at a cost just over $400, which included the new windshield.

This is an expensive repair for what I would consider to be a defect in the windshield bonding. The windshield bonding should last for more than 5 years, wouldn't you agree?

Yes I think it should. Both our Volvos (2002 and 2003) have their original windhshields and no leaks.

My 2012 XC60 is dripping water from the upper left side of the upper windshield seal during rain. The leak, which began in the corner, now occurs 1/3 of the way across the driver side upper seal. Not much, just single drops of water here and there. This car is accident free. The Sun roof drains are working correctly, not clogged. I've read about this problem essentially everywhere I've looked, but Volvo turns a blind eye. Such a seal should NEVER fail if done correctly. Volvo dealer wants $500 to repair what is a factory defect. I'll try windshield sealant meant for this, but Volvo should fix this.

Is Volvo taking the Rolls Royce approach to engineering failures? ... "front ends don't wear out on Rolls Royces", walks away.
