I think I have a major problem. My Volvo died 300k

Post by Volvodummy »

I am new here and new to Volvos. I bought a 2005 v70 last year that already had 300k on it. I wanted a cash car under a very limited budget. I wasn't thrilled about a wagon. I did a history on the car. 1 owner. Clean on inside and out. No accidents. History showed timing and engine mounts done around 150k. I took some advice from Volvo owners and didn't let the mileage scare me. Took it on test drive and fell in love right away. Comfy leather heated seats, sunroof. The speed on this car made it so fun to drive! I replaced struts about 2 months later. Replaced starter. Replaced spark plugs. Premium gas. 6 months after I bought it, it starts to get weird while idle. So I would just put it in neutral otherwise it would die. One day on highway going about 75 mph it seems to loose power, heard a strange "cling" noise and saw smoke (I think exhaust not hood). I immediately pulled off to exit and it died on me right on exit ramp. Turned off and gave it a few minutes. I had power but it would not start. Then no power at all. Had towed home and AAA jumped dead battery. It did not really turn over and start but made a ugly metal whining sound. I am going to have a mobile mechanic (master certified and Volvo) come diagnose it. I am terrified that it's really bad. I am having a hard time parting with this car if I have to. I would be willing to put money into it if it would last. With the mileage so high am I crazy for wanting to fix? What would be the worst case repair cost? I really love this car!

When mine did that it was the turbo shaft , the metal sound was the turbo wheel spinning loose in the exh manifold.

Your timing belt was due again at 250k. It's a 105k mile replacement item, along with all the hardware, and , at 300k, water pump is probably near end of life too.

If you Drive these cars to failure, they are much more expensive to fix.

120k miles interval for B5254T2, but, anyway, second t-belt was required well before 300k.

What would cost average to do timing? Mechanic charges 80/hr labor. It's also not the turbo model

If the timing belt broke, you're looking for a new used engine or rebuild the cylinder head.

UPDATE: mechanic came and looked at it yesterday. He said bad motor. Knock and no oil pressure. I asked how much to replace engine. He said he found one with 76k on it and cost 3300 installed. I really want to keep my baby. Car is paid for. I paid 2500 for her. I of course am going to get second opinions and shop around with my main mechanic and another who has worked on my Volvo before I do anything. She is a non turbo with a great body and pretty good interior for age. What are your opinions? I am attaching some photos. Thanks!
