I have a 2002 S60 AWD. I took it to a Jiffy Lube for the 1st oil change since I bought the car. After messing with the car for 20 mintues, the grease monkeys told me they couldn't get the oil filter off - it was recessed into a part of the engine. On the plus side, they replaced the oil and didn't charge me anything. So I have 2 questions:
1. What do I need to do to get the oil filter changed? Tell me it's not a dealer-only deal.
2. How long can I run the car with the old filter but new oil? IE, how long can I want before I try and have the oil changed again?
What's the deal with the oil filter?

in other words they didn't have - and couldn't be bothered to get the right tool to remove it.
I've never replaced it myself on the S60 to be honest- but no it's not a dealer own job. My tool of choice for the oil filter is an old sturdy screw driver- which I bash straight through the thing, use it like a box spanner then.
you should really replace it every oil change - but it won't do any real harm skipping one - but the next oil change should be in say in no more than 5K. Your literally now passing clean oil through a dirty oil filter, bit like having your lunch served on a used plate!

The oil filters on S60 is actually a cartridge and not a metal canister filter like most older vehicles. The actual filter fits inside a plastic canister which screws onto the motor just like a regular filter. Should be up front on the pass. side. IPD sells a tool to unscrew the canister so you can replace the filter inside. Hope this helps.

Ok, dont jam a screwdriver through the oil filter on an S60. The S60 has a unique oil filter, it has a plastic screw-on cover and it is oddly shaped so that you cant buy the tool that fits it from a normal auto store. Also, becase the filter is recessed into the oil pan it is very hard to get off. I had trouble getting it off and that was with the oil pan off the car, theres just no tool that fits around it correctly except the one made specifically for it. Buy it from here:Viper_7 wrote:in other words they didn't have - and couldn't be bothered to get the right tool to remove it.

Make sure you buy it from this website and not the dealership, they charge $40 bucks for it. Once you pull the cover off, you can pull the filter out and toss it. Make sure you take the old rubber O-ring off the cover and replace it with the one that comes with the new filter.

My goof - but I did say I'd never looked at it!
so, another Volvo "uniqueness" another part that requires special tools to remove - something else to try and keep you using the dealer!
Like the flat wiper blades - pretty scarce to find other than from Volvo.

I also have the 02 S60 AWD.
I ordered the tool off ebay for $9 shipped and it was easy as pie to get the filter cover off, but I have to think that any standard band type oil filter wrench would work just fine. My guess is that Jiffy Lube just didn't have the correct filter cartridge for your car so they made up the line about not being able to get it off.
It was a super easy procedure to do. Autozone had the filter (for $12 - most expensive oil filter I've ever purchased) and I put Mobile 1 full synth in.
1. Remove the plastic under-engine cover (7 bolts I think)
2. Take out Oil Pan Drain Plug and let oil drain
3. Unscrew plastic oil filter cover (front of oil pan and on passenger side)
4. Take out filter cartridge
5. Use small screwdriver to remove the rubber O-ring around the plastic oil filter cover
6. Put new O-ring on (supplied with the oil filter cartridge
7. Put new oil filter cartridge in plastic oil filter cover
8. Screw plastic oil filter cover back into place until it fully seats up against case
9. Put Oil Pan Drain Plug back in oil pan.
10. Add 6 qts fresh oil.
11. Put your oil cap back on engine
12. Bolt plastic under-engine cover back on
13. Take your Volvo for a short test drive and make sure you have no oil leaks.
Easiest oil change I've ever done actually! My car loves me.
