Vehicle Info - 2011 S80 3.2l
So the other night my wife jumped a curb which rips off the splash shield and busted up her oil pan. I have pulled the pan down and cleaned all the mating surfaces. Fortunately, from what I am able to conclude there appears to be no other damage besides the pan and shield. She has also indicated to me that she shut the car off within 15-20 after the accident and from the trail of oil the car only traveled about 125'. Anyway, I have ordered a new pan and splash shield at the dealer and will also pick up an oil filter, dipstick o-ring, pan sealing kit and drain plug sealing ring while I am there.
Since this is my first time installing a pan on an S80, I thought that I would post a topic to see if anyone who has done this before can give me some pointer and/or tips and tricks that may make the process go a little smoother and if there is something missing from my shopping list make me aware.
Thanks for looking,
Tom G

The sealant is Black RTV (silicone) high torque (stronger bonding, more rigid when cured).
Use the old pan as the guide to apply RTV to the new pan. The RTV goes on in a 1/8 bead to inside edge of pan and inboard of all bolt holes. There is a spot at both ends of pan where it is bit more complicated due to some openings so look at old pan for guidance in those areas. The last thing you do before putting pan up is to wipe the bottom face of bed plate (lower crankcase) with a brake cleaner sprayed non lint rag/paper towel to get oil off the area where sealant goes. Put in a few bolts loose and then run in some bell housing bolts to a very low torque, just snug with 1/4 inch ratchet tight. This pulls pan back to correct location. Then put in and torque all the pan to bed plate bolts and finish by torquing the bolts into transmission/bell housing. best to not run engine for at least 8 hrs after this.
