radio unit switches from CD to FM

Post by ptV70 »

On another thread, a member writes, "The issue with the existing radio is not stickiness, but that it randomly changes stations or even inputs."

I have a similar problem -- the HU-650 unit in my 2005 V70 will stop playing a CD and change over to FM at random moments. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ttry something stupid easy. Run the source furiously round and round several times. The frequency knob and source knob on my 2004 will go wacky every once in a while, like 7 to 8 months. If I spin them it will go months again before it does it again. I have not tried canned air to blow debris out. The knobs are not connected to pots like years past, they are a different type position sensor that simply does incremental counts up and down as you turn knob.

Oh, a little tantrum is how I found this. My station jump without me touching steering wheel button and I got pissed and spun the knob. Didn't do it again for months. When the source changed in the same way I spun that one and it hasn't done that again in over a year.

Mine gets a mind of its own, but only on very cold mornings (0F or lower). In my case it tends to switch from radio to CD instead of from CD to radio, and sometimes switches between random radio presets. The issue resolves after a few minutes as the radio/cabin gets a little warmer. My working theory is winky electrical connections...SMD solder joints or ribbon cable(s)/pin connections between internal boards. Mitsubishi Electronics modules seem to be consistent weak points across various Euro and Japanese makes where they are used. In P2 Volvos these are your Entertainment and SAT-NAV systems. AM reception was dead when I bought it (not an antenna issue: no static, completely silent). Note their consumer electronics division largely died out - because their stuff croaked a lot and people stopped buying. DLP rear projectors were their last mass/main consumer product to my knowledge, also notoriously problematic with high fail rate on circuit boards and poorly fabbed lens/optics that would cloud up effectively destroying picture quality. In addition they got hit with premature failing DMDs circa '07-'08 faulted to Texas Instruments QA as it related to a lubricant/sealant problem that would break down and instigate a cascade failure of individual mirrors on the DMD. Samsung got hit hard with the DMD issue too on their sets. I still have one (of Samsung's sets with the LED light source engine). Also affected by the bad run of DMDs, replaced that long ago but the TV has been a champ otherwise, and I gather a lot of them are still in use. The Mits sets, every single one of them, are in landfills by now.

Edit- correction I have two Samsung DLP sets still in use: a second smaller (Samsung HID lamp based model) in a bedroom connected to the gaming computer. That set also a champ @700 lm with >10,000-1 native contrast (third gen full HD DMD), 5 segment color wheel with yellow and cyan secondaries /full NTSC rich and wonderful color gamut for playing games it's the s---.
