In Europe and possibly other markets you could get pretty much any Volvo model with a manual transmission, which is pretty cool. We are also the only ones to my knowledge that didn't get their superb diesel engines. My dream would be a V70 D5 with a stick :)

And don't forget they recklessly refused to sell the superb 400 series in the states. What a marvellous piece of engineering...

I had a diesel 240. One of the very last ones, an '84 with a few mods that Volvo put into the '85 740s. It wasn't superb. It was the slowest thing ever on the road, and belched out huge clouds of black smoke. It could barely get out of its own way. Old ladies would pass me and hold their nose...

Sometimes I think nostalgically about getting another when I see one come up on eBay or Craigs List. Then I remember and come to my senses...

Unfortunately, when you mention diesel cars, people a lot of times refer to the old ones from the eighties and how bad they were. While that is certainly true to some extend, modern diesel engines have little in common with those old ones. They are much more quite, are much cleaner, are very fuel efficient and have loads of torque because they are turbocharged. They are actually really fun to drive.

I can understand why people would want a stick for racing or being able to make burn outs etc but in everyday traffic it's really a nuisance. I wish I had an automatic gearbox, so I wouldn't have to worry about working the clutch pedal in rush hour traffic. After 45-60 minutes in continous go-stop mode, I bet you'd be like me and long for an auto again ;)

That being said, I'd love to get my hands on a Volvo 243. Something like this perhaps: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... 773%29.jpg
Current: V50 2.0D, 2007, 6 speed manual
Previous: 850 2.0L N/A, 4 door 1996 manual, 740 2.3L N/A, 5 door 1992 manual, and S70 2.5T 1999 manual
