Catalytic converter on 2001 S40

Post by tioluck »

Hi,

My catalytic converter was broken a month ago. I have a S40 2001 1.6 Sport Car. I asked on Volvo one month ago, and told me that catalytic converter costs 500

A catalytic converter is expected to last 80,000 to 160,000 kms.

I can't help with the prices as the manufacturers charge what they want and we have to pay. You should be able to get a non-Volvo part cheaper. I did.

Im just wondering how did you know that you cat had kicked the bucket? What sort of obvious signs were there?
I have a noise coming from my exhaust. The first mechanic I took my S40 to, said it was just a crack in the Y piece of the exhaust. Once they had welded that, and the noise was still there, they said it was probably the cat. Apparently it has ceramic parts in it, god know if that true or not. If it does make a noise when the cat breaks, is the noise only obvious when the engine is cold?

Sorry for the late reply, but I have been away for a jaunt around Scotland.

The most obvious sign of a cat going wrong is a reduction in performance, as described in the links in my earlier post. They also give you some ideas on how to check the cat yourself. I have never known one to make the exhaust noisier, but, I suppose, it is possible.
