816 radio faceplate transplant?

Post by Ringo »

In my 99 v70 XC I have the 816 radio with the circuit board attached to the back of the faceplate. I replaced some bulbs and when reassembling I inserted the ribbon into the board connector but it won’t stay “seated”. I’m not sure if it’s the ribbon or the connector on the board.

If it’s the connector (and not the ribbon) can I just swap the faceplate of a junker radio? I guess what I'm wondering is if the security code is stored in the board in the radio BODY or in the faceplate circuitry? Can I do a faceplate transplant?

I think you can. I had a similar situation and had the same question but I can't remember if I actually did he swap or just replaced the radio. The consensus was that the code lives in the radio and not the board behind the faceplate.

I've never worked with that particularribbon connector,
but many of them have insertion locking mechanisms.

Often, a "frame" around the connector opening is pulled
out to allow the ribbon to be fully seated, then clicked
back in to lock the ribbon into the connector. I'd say
have a closer look - You may get lucky!

Why would you bother?
These radios can be bought for $25 all day long

Doesn't sound like any "5 second" fix to me

How can you say that without knowing what the actual problem is?
And not everyone lives down the street from a junk yard or feels the
need to just pitch something without making an effort to repair it.
Agree to disagree...

There is normally a retainer for the ribbon cable. So have a second look. No it is not a 5 second job but more like 10 minutes. For me it is a 1 hour drive to PnP to get another radio if there is one to get. I pay $25 CDN for a SC-815/6 at normal prices and half that on their 50% off sale. Mind you I have a stash of radios, amps and amp cables just in case!

Remember if you go the junk-yard route to get the VIN# of the vehicle to make it easier to get the Code.

Good luck!

Neil.

A junk yard radio you get will have bulbs burnt out too so you're back to square one.
I have a working 816 on a shelf in my garage if anyone is interested. However, I would want more than $25 for it and the cost of shipping. That said, it's probably in your best interest to getting yours replaced right. If you just need a face plate you can get one off of another in a junk yard, I would think.

I have had the ribbon end get damaged a few times. You can swap the ribbon or the faceplate, both will work. The ribbons do not have a clip.
