Exhaust cam position sensor?

Post by jmana »

Hi, I need to change the timing belt and exhaust VVT on my 04 xc90. I bought the cam locking tool, and read that the dual VVT engines have 2 cam position sensors which need removed to install the tool. I can see the intake one but on the exhaust side all I see is the upper engine mount. Do I need to remove this? If so, how?

Maybe someone else can chime in... that has done it on that car... but I am 99% sure you will need to remove the mount to gain access to the back of the exhaust cam. It is something like 6 bolts one down low hard to see. If that car has an exhaust side position sensor then remove that to get to back of cam to install locking tool. I just did this on my C70 which had only an exhaust VVT and exhaust side cam position sensor. You can probably find a Robert DIY video to get the idea of removing.

You have to remove the air filter assembly and move the large fuse box sitting in front of the air filter assembly, this will give you access to the cam position sensor housing, I'm assuming you have a T6. I just did that on my T6 several times and thats what I did to gain access, no reason to remove the engine mount assembly.

Yes I was, the hardest task of dealing with the exhaust cam position sensor is getting the housing cover off because the PCV system big pipe hoses make it difficult to get in there and disconnect the wiring harness from the cam position sensor housing. I removed the PCV hoses and put straight forward clamps on the hoses when I put it back together.
Putting the cam locking tool is fairly straight forward, just make sure you line up the cams with the cover and use a sharpi marker to accent the position marks on the cam when you do it.
