Oil filter install
Oil filter install
I did my first oil change on my newly acquired 2004 V70. I tried to push the filter onto the canister, but when I felt the needed force became excessive, I pushed the cartridge onto the motor. The canister torqued normally. My question is, is it imperative that the filter goes onto the canister first, or am I OK putting it on the motor first? All future changes will go on the canister first. Thanks

I always push the filter onto the motor, install the new o-ring then torque on the canister. Been doing it this way for 15+ years and haven't had a problem or leak yet.
Congratulations on your 1st oil change.

I have the same question, you can either push it inside the cartridge, or push it into the oil pan. Which way? When the cartridge is tightened, does the filter come at the same place?
Side note, I use to fill the cartridge with some fresh oil before installing it.

Some of the filters are a bit tough to push into the motor, if I remember right Mahle ( blue white box) filters are tighter than the Mann ( green yellow) I usually use.
Congrats on your oil change. You just saved $100 and even more importantly, didn't over torque anything

I usually put a little oil in the cup, press the filter in and then fill about 2/3. Mobil 1 and Wix. New crush washer (I just happen to have a metric ton of them)
I just watched the FCP video, they put it on the car with no prefill..... So I guess that's cool too?

Yeah, I'm using the Mahle (from IPD). They're snug. It's essential to also use a new crush washer. Car has gotten only Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic since the first change by the dealer (in 2001). I've never pre-filled the canister for fear of spilling and making a mess. Seems like a good idea to have it pre-filled.abscate wrote:Some of the filters are a bit tough to push into the motor, if I remember right Mahle ( blue white box) filters are tighter than the Mann ( green yellow) I usually use.
