P80 front brake caliper and hoses question

Post by scot850 »

Ok, I'm easily confused, but I need help clarifying something.

For all the years I have bought front brake calipers for P80's they all use the same caliper as far as I recall. So looking at the Volvo Vida it lists a whole bunch of options, but more interestingly, for the caliper and hose they list 15" or 16" for the front brakes? What has wheel diameter got to do with it? I understood it was all to with the brake rotor diameter, 280mm or 302mm. There the hose and caliper bracket make a difference, but again they used the same caliper as I understood it. Also they list a different caliper bracket up to -99 and a different one for 2000?

Vida also takes you to the chassis plate for a brake code, but I cannot find any of the codes that refer to wheel size or brakes. What am I missing on this?

The reason for the question is I am planning to swap to 16" summer rims and continue to use the 15" snows on this 2000 V70 base model. Naturally found one of the caliper has a dust shield that is not fitted correctly and is 50% loose of the piston. Had thought about removing the piston and re-fitting it but it has clearly been out for a while based on the caliper rust on the piston.

Most annoying thing again is the pads and rotors were changed shortly before I bought the car by PO, there is no way the piston was not like this then. Once again the wonderful workmanship of the 'professional' mechanics here in Calgary.

2nd question on the pads. The new pads fitted are non-OE (no idea of the brand) but again don't recall the outer 'free' pad normally being stuck to the caliper. I have to gently hammer it to release it. Should they not be slightly loose to allow them to 'float' somewhat? I appreciate the outer pad is the 'fixed' one and the caliper sliders and the inner one on the piston have some latitude but does the outer one not also?

Thanks,

Neil.

One thought is that many of the re-manufactured items come with a re-furbished caliper bracket, so maybe they are equating 15" wheels come with the 280mm rotors and 16" wheels automatically have the 302mm rotors and hence the different part numbers?

Local supplier (have to use them due to the core charge and shipping costs to US suppliers) are wanting $89 + tax for a remanufactured unit (about $70 US). Way more expensive than US suppliers, but at least they have it tomorrow.

I'll order the brake hose from local dealer and swap that out. Did check and the PO has a receipt for replacement hoses in 2014, but I am amazed how rusty they are. Guess they were not OE parts.

I've noticed a lot of websites say "15 inch wheels" and "16 inch wheels." I assume they are referring to 280mm vs. 302mm rotors, but the only items that affects are rotors and hoses, AFAIK. Calipers are the same, pads are the same. I'm not sure why they would say anything about the calipers.
Basically, if you're using 15" winter wheels, stick to your 280s. I'd just check the part numbers on your car to confirm.
Sorry, you're confusing me too haha.
