Safe to remove angle gear?

Safe to remove angle gear?

Hi, Is it safe to remove the angle gear and leave it out on our 2004 Volvo XC70? I see others do it on other models, but can't find an example of anyone doing it on ours. We have the Geartronic transmission if that matters... Thanks!
