whinning sound from front right

Post by Pete »

I own a 93 850 GLE, while driving along recently i've found that turning to the left slightly has induced a whinning sound in the front right wheel area, what is the probably cause of this? In the haynes manual it says the hub assemblys should never need servicing because there sealed but do the bearings fail? Is it also possible the noise is coming from the intermediate driveshaft bearings or could it be the driveshafts c.v. joints? I dont really want to start replacing stuff to elminate the problem areas as each item is expensive any sujestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like your 850 has what mine and some others' has: the Ghostly Moan. Is it kind of rpm-related? Only happens on startup? Comes from front-right-low part of engine bay?

Nobody that I know has successfully determined the cause. I have a feeling it's related to the timing belt or tb shroud. I'll find out soon as I have to change the belt.

No its wheel speed related, you can put the car in neutral and coast and its still there, definately in the right hand drive train. Its kind of high pitch squelling but not brake disc pitch!

I had that problem on my 1994 850 Turbo. Turned out it was the wheel bearing. It is not uncommon on 850s. If you only get the sound when the car is rolling, It will be pretty likely that your wheel bearing will need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

Hi Pete,

I had the same problem and brought the car to my friend who is a mechanic. All he did was just "bombard" the inner axle area of just behind the mag wheel with a very good lubricant (better than WD40), and the noise was gone! I have to do this every 4 months to prevent the sound from coming back, but it's definitely much better than forking over $600+!!!

Hope this helps! :D
