The wife's 1996 850 Turbo had been smoking intermittently for months. Sometimes it wouldn't smoke for weeks and then other times crazy smoke everyday. Thanks to reading many of the posts herein, it was determined that the turbo was shot and needed to be rebuilt. The dealer showed that the correct turbo for the car was part number 8601070, which the Internet said was a TD04HL-15G-7. Not knowing if the turbo had ever been previously replaced by an aftermarket model, I was relieved when I got it out of the car to see that it was in fact a Volvo turbo with the aforementioned part number and designation on the attached metal placard.
I found a local re-builder that agreed to do the job for $320, regardless of whether it was a minor or major rebuild. I documented our serial number and my wife dropped it off. When she went to pick it up, he only charged her $300. When I got home I was dismayed to see that she had not been given our original turbo rebuilt, but rather a part number 8658098 TD04HL-13T. The dealer does not show an association with the 850 and this part number, only later model Volvos. When I called the re-builder, he said that my original turbo could not be rebuilt. He said that the "wheels" had been damaged, so he gave us an already rebuilt model that he had in stock. He said that he has been rebuilding turbos for years and assured me that the model we got would fit with no issues. I want to believe him, and just slap it in the car to get back up and running, but am frustrated because I just wanted my original part, with matching part number, rebuilt. He never called to say, or mentioned to my wife when she picked it up, that the original could not be rebuilt, so I feel like he may be trying to pull a fast one by taking my 15G and giving me a 13T.
Is a 15G better, or lesser, than a 13T?
I was under the impression that all units could be rebuilt, but that in cases of extreme damage a new "cartridge" that contained the "wheels" might have to be installed. I could have bought a new turbo on eBay for about the same price, and still have my old one for future needs, but now I've gotten this one from him, and he is in possession of my original (which he did agree to hold on to while I figure this out).
Sorry for the long post, I'm still a newbie, but any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
Lastly, I removed the turbo with the exhaust manifold attachment connected, but am having trouble determining which parts I should order from FCPEuro for when I reinstall it. Both turbo water cooling hoses are new, but I'm not clear on gaskets, o-rings, and intercooler hoses. I've attached a jpg of my current cart and would appreciate if anyone could tell me if I am missing or overdoing anything.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

You can always ask for the old 15G parts back to inspect yourself. But it is unprofessional for a company not to tell you about swapping parts until you call.

The 13T will not fit back on in place of the 15G since the exhaust outlet nozzle is at a different angle. On your parts order you will need six of the copper crush washers and I would replace the coolant hoses while you have it out, it is much easier and they all eventually fail.
You will need a 15G to make this all work so you will likely need to scout the pick n pull lots to find one.

Even if you can get it to fit by changing exhaust flanges, the 13T will not produce as much boost as the 15G and the car's performance will be altered. The only intercooler hose near the turbo is 3126730. If you need intercooler hoses I would buy silicone (Eeuroparts usually has a good supply) or Volvo branded, the cheap MacKay hoses will get oil soaked and fail relatively quickly.

If he rebuilds turbos, he should have known the 15g is not the same as a 13t; I'm surprised he would try and pass it off as the same performance wise. Sorry to hear that, hopefully you'll get it figured out.
