uneven running

I have a 1993 940s Torbo saloon. She is running very strange in that whilst cruising the revs increase about 500rpm, all the lights go bright and all the engine gauges react with the increase in revs.This only lasts for afew seconds at a time but is becoming more frequent. Even off load the fault is there. Can anyone give me an idea where to start

To me, it seems like you are getting over voltage. Sounds like a generator problem. The regulator in the generator is not working.

Maybe you are dropping the load from the battery. For that reason check also the connections between the generator and the battery including the thick ground cable. The ground cable is rather often broken due to vibrations.
