1997 V70 NA. Thoughts required on wheel + suspension combinations.

Post by t12 »

Hello everyone, I'm recently embarked on a journey to learn something about cars and being able to upgrade and service things myself. I've been looking into many of the stage 0 tune up for my V70 but am also looking to improve things beyond stock.

I recently acquired some 17" x 7.5" Canisto alloys, but having done some further research, may prove problematic.

Here are my goals:
Fit 17" Canistos to my V70 without sacrificing too much ride quality and avoiding tyre rub!

The first piece of advice I've seen is to use 215 45 R17 instead of 225 45 R17 tyres to reduce the chance of tyre rub. Is there still a chance of the tyres rubbing in this case? Which tyre brand should I go for, originally the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3's looked great with the rim protection but should I opt for tyres specifcally without rim protection in the hope that they will be slightly thinner? Or does this not affect the point at which the tyres rub at full lock?

These tyres will likely result in the ride quality going down hill, hopefully not terribly (coming from 15" Antlias) with a nice new set of tyres. However, it leaves me open to upgrading the suspension i.e. springs and dampers. What is going to be the most comfortable and best handling combination? I'm rather afraid that lowering the suspension any further will make the tyres rub horribly, even with the 215's. I've looked everywhere on various forums for an answer to this but there is not much mention of it in conjunction with 17" wheels.

I'd really appreciate any insight and recommendations into my dilemma.
