Speedometer troubles again

Post by tocas »

Hi :D

Could anyone help me about these questions, sorry about the lenght but I make them all at the same time.

My 940 SE 1992 B200FT Break with 270.000 Km, speedometer stop working again. When stoped for much time they went crazy but after some kilometers starts working fine, until the car was stoped again for weeks. Last time did that and stop working for good, but all the other instruments works fine.

I posted here and Bill (thanks again) tell me the problem may be in the sensor in the diferential, so I put some WD40 oil over it and worked just fine for 6 days.

Now wont move or move for little time to 80 Km/h and then zero again, and the distance counter (what's the word ? tripmaster ?) don't work, and worked before.
I take it to an electrician and they told me that the sensor looks fine and the test to the speedometer show that the distance counter wont work and the speedometer can't pass above 80 Km/h. Anyone have any idea what is ?
The mechanic told me that the speedometer has a mixture of japanese and german parts and is almost impossible to fix, do anyone know where can I fix it in Europe ?

Where can I buy used spare parts for Volvo in Europe, like the speedometer, there are many in the USA and UK but they are in miles and not in kilometers ?

My two exterior rear view mirrors, only the glass, vibrates a lot above 120 Km/h, sometimes it looks they gone fall, they are in place, it's that normal, any solution ?

Steering to the left makes a noise like something was scraping, what could it be ?

I want to substitute my steering wheel for another with leather, because mine is aging, but the problem is that the 940 uses the old dashboard, and the newer 940/960 steering whell don't fix, there are any leather steering wheel for the pre-1992 models without airbag ?, where can I buy one ? Or where can I fix mine, the rubber is soft, and put leather over it in Europe ?

It's normal that the turbo gauge enter's in the white only area or must work within the black with the white outline area ? Could be a sign of to much turbo pressure ?

What's the normal consumption in a normal driving in liters per 100 Kilometres, mine does 15 litres for 100, driving slowly, is that excessive ?

What are the performances of this car, accelaration, maximum speed ?

At low rpm the engine and gear box vibrates and moves a lot, but not in movement, it's that normal for eliminating the vibrations or a sign that a engine suport may be broken ?

Regards and thanks for any answer.

Hello,
I have had the same problem with my 91 940 estate turbo. On the differential, there is a sensor for the speedo, it is either the connection to this or the unit itself.
GOOD LUCK:)

Thanks 1drub :D

The speedometer trouble is allready fix for good, it wasn't the sensor, but the speedometer itself, i bought one in the scrapyard.

About the other questions i put, since you had a similar model, could you answer one of them ?

Regards

Pleased you got your speedometer fixed.

Do you know if the glass in the mirrors has ever been replaced? It is possible that it is working loose. On some Volvo models there is a hole in the lower part of the mirror housing which lets you change the glass without removing the mirror from the car. Press the lower edge of the glass inwards so that you can see the retaining teeth through the hole. To remove the glass prise the teeth to the right using a small screwdriver through the hole. To tighten the glass prise the teeth to the left.

The noise on the steering may be comming from the brakes. My daughter had a similar problem on her Mitsubishi last week and I found that one of the pads was not coming off the disc because of rust on the slide. It may pay to check the caliper guide pins.

Can you not buy a steering wheel from the scrapyard where you got the speedometer? The people I deal with for used parts in the UK are
http://www.partsgateway.co.uk/. They have contacts with several Volvo breakers and may be able to help you.

The turbo gauge should be in the black when driving normally and should go into the white when accelerating hard enough to engage the turbo. It certainly seems like you have too much pressure but the boost gauge is not always accurate. If the pressure is too high it could be the reason for your poor fuel figures, but I do not know how you drive the car and I can't really comment on this. When I had my 940 turbo I usually returned about 9.5 litres per 100kms. KPL varies from driver to driver and differing driving conditions eg urban, motorways, traffic jams.

You may have a broken engine or gearbox mounting. Most are easy to check visually, the hardest being the right hand side engine mounting.

Hi :D

Thanks again, billofdurham.

I drive slowly and the consumption is really to high for my driving style.

The mirror glasses were allready replaced, probably thats the cause.

Anyday, in an "german autobahn" my break goes to the maximum of 200 Km/h, sould't do a little more ?

Regards
