climate control bulb clarification

Post by amblerman »

Hi folks,

I have a 99 s70 base manual and I'm in the process of removing my dash to repair the horrible dash mounts. I also have several bulbs out so I'm taking care of that too.

I need to take care of my climate control bulbs and I've encountered a little bit of difficulty there. Most of the help guides or videos I've watched seem to be for the 850 which used a different system.

Below are pictures of my climate control and the bulb in question. Can someone tell me the right part number? There seems to be several out there that look similar and I want to get the right one.

Also, do I have to get the bulb+socket or can I replace just the bulb. I tried pulling on the bulb but it didn't budge.

This bulb seems to have a rubber coating. Is that for any other reason than to tint the light?

- Search forum for Radio Shack bulbs, about 99 cents/each; part # 272-1092.
- Transfer the blue mini condom to new bulb.

Mouser is basically always your cheapest, easiest and most reliable source for radio and dash bulbs, e.g. see viewtopic.php?t=67244

Radio bulbs they use part number 560-CNW123, $0.65 each

Part number there for the dash switch bulbs is 560-7219, they are $0.39 each

Thanks for the links folks. Those are what I need.

I'm don't think the mini bulb from Radio Shack would work easily for this particular application.

I tried taking out one of the bulbs and it just shattered on me. When I used a magnifier, I could see that the bulb leads were actually welded/soldered/bonded to the metal of the socket itself. Not meant for easy replacement.

It wasn't like the sockets in some of the switches where you wrap the leads around the socket itself to lock things in place. This particular set up had the leads permanently attached to the socket. I could clip the wires, dig out the broken glass and then solder the new leads in place but since I just need two, I'll get them as a complete unit instead of trying to force the replacement.

The mini bulbs from Radio Shack would work for the switch style socket though.
Thanks again folks.

Andy
