Electrical grounding question - 2000 V70 base/NA

Post by scot850 »

I asked this in another thread, but it may have got lost in all the info.

I have read the later cars 99/00 are more sensitive to voltage/current issues, which I would have thought therefore more likely to suffer from bad grounding issues also.

Curiously, my 2000 V70 NA with a 5 speed auto, has 1 ground wire less than my 2000 V70R. The 'missing' ground wire runs from the back of the top torque mounting aluminum block to the firewall approximately in the middle of the car. Having spoken to a senior Volvo mechanic, he said strangely that some have that ground fitted and some do not. No reason or logic seems to have been applied.

When I pulled a almost brand new torque block from a 99 S70 base, it has the extra ground which my car has not.

So the question here is does it matter? If it does should I fit the spare wire from that block to the car, and even if it is not a real issue, does fitting have any likelihood of causing an issue, or does an extra ground make no real difference unless one of the others is bad?

Below you can see the wire on the PnP pulled part from a 99 S70 base model.

Below you can see the unused connection in the middle of the picture to the left of the top torque rod rear mount. When removed the nut does not look like it was ever used. You can see the unused connection on the top torque mount casting (original was the same).

Grounding is like being rich or thin; there is never too much. I would take the strap and go from the mount to any open bolt on the firewall.

Well I will never be rich or thin. First part due to owning old Volvos!!!

I can use the actual stud on the firewall as shown in the 2nd picture which is where the 'R' has it's strap connected too. Not being of an electrical bias, I was concerned when folk post the later cars are sensitive to voltage, that by adding an extra ground may through the cars' electrical 'balance' into a turmoil!

Thanks Lee,

Neil.

Ground it til you drop.....sounds like a rap band's new hit track.

My 2000 V70 didn't have one there and never had an electrical issue.

I hear you on that too Mike!

No harm adding it for the 5 minutes it will take next time I am under the hood.

I have not as yet fitted the 'extra/optional' ground wire but issue with the warning lights appears to be resolved with a re-built aBS module from Matt at Mid-West ABS.

May yet fit the extra ground for security.
