Steering Angle Sensor Issue.

Post by Tubbs76 »

Hi all,

The dreaded Anti Skid Service Required error. Took it to a place to get scanned, came up as an angle sensor issue. Thought plausible as all the engine mounts are shot, no doubt alignment is out, etc.

Just got all of the mounts done and a front wheel alignment as a result. Ordered a new sensor and fitted it, pretty straight forwarded as it comes locked and is set to 0 degrees.

Took it this arvo to get scanned, re calibrated and error wiped and it wouldn't work. Now telling me I have code UO42864 - Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module plausibility failure. Any idea what this means and how to fix it? all help appreciated.

I posted my thoughts on the other similar thread. So a summary - I believe a factory new module, 2005 on-wards, needs software downloaded as the SAS comes "empty". A factory new module can work with various vehicles - so the software download is the point of distinction, so to speak.

A used module comes with the software already installed from the donor vehicle - so calibration is all that is needed.

Best bet is to call the dealer and ask.

Hi Superherman,

Problem solved. Looks like a simple oversight from both the supplier and myself. Not sure if you aware but fr my particular XC90 (could be others also) turns out that there are 3 different angle sensors to choose from. They are -
- Part # 31264468 (Exc DSTC)
- Part # 31313083 (DSTC) US for cars with 3 steps Airbag Variant code EM04
- Part # 31268566 DSTC (Ex US) for cars with 2 steps Airbag Variant cose EMO2

I was sent part # 31264468 when it should have been #31313083. No wonder it was trowing the fault code. it would never work as it doesn't have the software for the DSTC required.

Was doing my head in as I know i calibrated it corretly and fitted it correctly. In the process of organising a return and refund and start the process of looking for the correct part new on the cheap. So expensive

So can you confirm that the SAS comes loaded with the required software?

It would be good information to know that a new SAS for the specific vehicle needs is plug-and-play besides the calibration.

From what i understand, If the SAS is new, it will def have to have the software downloaded onto it. Calibration is still required also. I am trying to determine if a second hand unit required software or not. I ended up sourcing a second hand unit which supposedly has no issues with it from a reputable wrecking yard here in Sydney for $200 Aus.

My understanding is in theory, software should already be loaded as it comes from a working vehicle and the angle sensor itself works. Perhaps a manual calibration required but in theory it should be plug and play. I've done it that many times now I can have the old one out and the new one in with everything put back together in under 20 minutes lol.

From what I read a like for like used one should work. It must have the correct options (DTSC and possibly airbags) though.

The SAS is not married to the VIN. I have read of people doing it and it working plug and play.

Post your findings. Also check all surrounding area for liquid intrusion from a spill. That is what took mine out. During clean up I found some corroded connectors on the steering wheel module. Good luck.
