Hello,
1992 Volvo 244 with 121k miles. Flushed ATF (with Mobil 1), replaced broken kick-down cable, replaced filter screen and gasket, replaced OD solenoid, re-torqued pan a few times. Transmission shifts smoothly and works perfectly except for one problem. It likes to discharge ATF out of breather tube at the top, or out of the kick-down cable inside the engine bay. Initially it appeared like an oil leak. I would drive around, park and start noticing oil dripping from around the pan or from the cross-member. The whole undercarriage would then be covered with an oil film, all the way to the rear axle. In some cases the ATF would start coming from the the kick-down cable inside the engine bay. This would continue until dip-stick would read completely dry while checking the oil using recommended procedure - drive for 30 minutes, park, cycle through all the gears then back to park, wait for two minutes then check the oil level. If ATF is added back (approximately 1/2 qt.) then the cycle repeats itself.
Eventually I got tired from having the transmission being soaked in ATF and attached the hose to the breathing tube and routed it down. That does not stop the leaks but at least I won't have to clean the undercarriage as often. Does anyone know what would be the cause of these discharges and what else can I do to keep the ATF inside the transmission, which is where I think it belongs?
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
/s/ Al

The transmission dipstick for the AW71 in my 1988 760 has marks on both sides. One side is for cold level and the other side is for hot level. Car should probably be driven for 20 minutes, then check the level with transmission in park and engine idling.
