Failed, XC90 Spring seat installed less than 2 years ago...

Post by rspi »

Replaced the struts on my 850 wagon today only to find that the XC90 spring seats that I installed last year were torn all the way through. I purchased them about 18 months ago and installed them on my wagon. If I had to guess they have about 40,000 miles on them. Will anything last these days?

Bummer! I have a bad one on my T5-R too, and the mileage isn't very much, but I will have to check it.

That is a worry for all of us if that is a genuine OE Volvo part and it has only lasted that long.

Robert that sucks. I would have thought the Genuine seats would have given you a lot more life than that.
Are ruts in the road particularly deep where you regularly drive and do you go into corners hard when safe to do so?

I tried all sorts of spring seats and have used quite a few of the Pro Parts variety bought locally from an indie supplier. They don't have the filled area that the XC90 part number has near the underside of the steel bush which adds about 10% more material between the bush and the other metal.

On our 2006 XC90 I recently used URO seats because they're referenced under the XC90 part number and have the extra material on the underside. They even smell like URO began using rubber unlike previous URO stuff I've bought. If the URO part holds up on an XC90 it should be better on the lighter cars in theory however we don't do much yearly mileage on her as the wife does small trips.

Yes I'm guilty of all of above, except off road racing. lol

I put a set of them on a car in the Chicago area 10 days ago, they came in reins boxes and had Volvo scraped off of them. Supposed to be the good XC90 ones but 1/2 the price. I guess we get what they give us.

When it's 1/2 price... it's shady. I bought control arm rear bushing Lemforder in Lemforder bag and box, cracked after 1 year. There is a market for fake parts, even with the 'Volvo' name scrapped (chinese market is genius for that) I remember seen more than one variant of the XC90 'redesigned' spring seats, my guess is there are low quality brands out there who simply added some extra rubber but used the same horrible rubber quality you'll get from, say, Sweden Parts. Personally, I'd rather use the old regular Sachs ones, than fall for the 'beefed' up XC90 one. After all, the original Sachs ones do last a good 8 years, well worth using them again on a 100K miles car. Finally, I'm not sure about this, but the original spring seats on my car had a somehow great 'floating-plush' ride feeling on a highway, which I've lost once I've replaced them with new Febi (which are terrible by the way, cracked after 1 year).

I now run on Reins boxed spring seats from Eeuroparts, 1 year since bought them new. Last year I checked and there was already a sign of worn rubber near the sleeve. I'll check them again this week. The guy from Eeuroparts was convinced these are original Volvo parts in 'white' boxes. Here's his email, this week I'll have the answer if he lied or not

Thanks for the reply Dave

I know the original supplier was Sachs/Boge for the spring seats. Do you know if Volvo is now getting them from Hutchinson instead?

to me
Hello,
I believe that Volvo uses an array of OES and Hutchinson is one of them. The quality is top notch and I would not hesitate in the least to use their product. I am a retired Technician of 34 years and a shop owner and have installed numerous Hutchinson parts and have never had any issue. Stay well, and thanks for the inquiry.

Thank you for choosing www.eEuroparts.com

Dave S."

I got rid of my spring seats problem permanently. Not cheap though, and you'll have to make up your own solution on how to make the stock springs with them.
