No warning light for alternator not working

This seems nuts to me
There's no warning light on the dash for an alternator fault.
My serpentine belt snapped and the first warning you get from the car after that is a low battery warning when the battery runs down, shortly followed by the car stopping and all the electrics failing, which is a recovery job. This is probably a good few hours after the belt actually snapped
If there was a dash warning for failed alternator it would give you time to drive home/to a garage.

Same thing happened to me on my 1994 850. Was driving along and then suddenly nothing. Had to buy a new battery to get me home. Never got a warning light.
