My Front Brake Job

Post by MadeInJapan »

So, I did my front brakes today. Ordered pads (Jurid) for what comes up for my 320mm rotors. I've used Jurid pads on most of my Volvo's over their life-time and I believe they are OEM in most cases.
These were a direct match for what was on the front...the pads were about toast so I needed them!
The strange thing is, no matter where I searched on the web (including here), nothing came up with the kind of calipers I have on my S40 AWD T5.
Finally, as I was in the middle of changing my pads (and unsure of what exactly I was doing), I ran into where my computer was and found some YouTube videos.
To be honest, my calipers are just like the XC90 calipers...there is a strange clip that acts like an anti-rattle device, but it's not a wire. There's also a "Police Upgrade" kit for a Volvo that uses similar calipers.
The back of these calipers have 4 torx bolts that when undone will take the entire back side of the caliper apart. Somewhere in between all of these torx bolts are the 2, 7mm hex key slider pins.
One video I saw, had the guy taking all of those torx bolts out and separating the caliper completely. and still taking the entire caliper bracket off. Way- over done for what should be a simple pad change.
Another I saw had the guy take the entire caliper bracket off with the caliper attached to it...that's what I followed and did at first but then once I figured out how things all come apart, I left the bracket in place and was able to compress the caliper and get the pads out and back in on the 2nd one I did. The anti-rattle clip was another thing I had to figure out... It clips under a piece of metal that is actually attached to the back side of the pads...sort of hard to explain but if you don't really get it on there good, it can fly out like a huge spring and end up 50 feet away. It has some bulk so there is potential of some injury if it flew right at your face. I was lucky not to incur the wrath of that clip but trying to get it out, it did fling itself across the driveway and into the yard. In watching a few video's trying to learn what to do in my case, I saw some instructional video's of people trying to show you how to replace XC90 pads (with the same style calipers I have) and I would have to say that I did a better job than they did! It was disgusting that very few of these guys cleaned up their calipers or used any backing grease. None of them cleaned and re-greased the slider pins... Okay, anyway, I thought I would rant about that and... share. I should have taken pictures.

Was curious if anyone else have calipers on their S40 or V50 like mine?

Of course, my car- although destined for the U.S. was bought in Germany and brought over by a service man...maybe that's why I'm seeing a different style of some things when I try to look things up. Makes me wonder if I have some other itinerations on my car that are different from other S40's when I go to replace other parts....

MIJ, your MVS search zin is a bit off. I had a thread about the front brakes a while back: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=67534&p=352097#p352097
The calipers are a result of the Ford ownership. The caliper on the front of the C30 is the same as the Ford Fusion and Focus of the same vintage.

My daughter's C30 is also a Military Sales car that I got in Germany. There are no mechanical differences between the European and US models but there were more paint options. When you do get around to the rear brakes they are a PIA especially if you ever drive on any roads that get salted in the wintertime. I did that brake job at 100K. There is a special tool for compressing/rotation the piston back into the housing.

Thanks- yes, I have the tool for the rear. I'm glad there is still meat on the pads back there.
I found XC90 front calipers of the same era are the same as mine- strange but I was lucky and ordered the correct pads!
The job wasn't hard once I figure out the anti-rattle piece that is different from any car I've seen so far.
