Please Spare my gasket Norse Gods

Post by boydmartin »

Update to previous post in which I was asking degree of difficulty in blown gasket and whether it was worth to fix my 2005 V50 2.4. Well, I opened the hood for no good reason and noticed the coolant was completely gone. So I poured some in to minimum level and it sank quickly (engine off) to about half an inch. It appears it somehow leaked away from bottle and ended up on ground somewhere near middle of engine. I am hoping the Nordic gods are smiling upon me and this is an easier fix than originally thought. Any ideas? Obviously bottle is cracked, but why would it leak away from where I poured coolant in?

It was already low I assume- so low that it took all of that...I would think a leak somewhere else beside bottle unless this was the result after you drove it. Pressurized bottles don't do well if they are cracked after pressure builds up and they do build up rapidly. Btw, replacement tanks should be OEM as should be the cap to it. Third party replacements are known to leak right off of the bat. If you do truly have a blown head gasket, it may have also created a horrible leak. You are hurting the engine's lower sections further (not just the head) if you keep driving it. Certainly, you will need a new head or for it to be planed and made true...This is a good time to check condition of your valves and exchange your valve stem seals with new ones. Depending on miles, condition of your car and your love for it, it may not be worth all of that work.
