Desperate..850, S70, V70 Auto. Trans. Temp. Sensor 3515267

Post by bjack56 »

1993 Volvo 850...
Replaced Auto Trans solenoids & PNP switch. Discovered wires for Temp Sensor (3515267) were completely corroded & broken at connection to Sensor body.

The part is on 850, S70 & V70 but no longer made & no aftermarket part number available.

Is there another sensor body I can use? Pick-n-Pull option is a major ordeal to access the part for removal...undo engine mounts & jack engine :x

You could try eBay and junk yards (if it comes down to it) obviously, but you could contact/search on used Volvo parts websites like Erie Vo-Vo. Maybe check CL for people parting out a P80.
Good luck!

Unfortunately although some places still list it (like pelican parts) many don't update their systems until someone asks for the part and even then they sometimes don't.

Looks like it will have to be a used part unfortunately. The later 5-speed auto does not list a temp. sensor at all. We are finding more parts becoming obsolete every day. I tried looking up the part on gcp.se (they bought all the pre-2000 stocks of parts from Volvo (and known as Volvo classic), but again it is not listed. Like you I can't find an aftermarket part either.

THX Neil, I was resigned to finding a "good" used part but that too was almost impossible to find due to it's location on the transmission...& 1.5-2 hrs to access IF you have the tools for pick-n-pull.

SUCCESS! I had tried every forum, forum sale, supplier...etc possible, or so I thought. Saw the sponsor ad for Voluparts here on MVS. Webpage said "limited" inventory on the web but call & likely have it. Called them (Bill), said he was sure he had since he's been doing this 40yrs! Called me back in about 3hrs, had the part & $40 shipped :D

Bill at Voluparts is a wealth of knowledge including DTC codes. Said I should have called him first with my DTC Tranny Solenoid code as it was likely just a bad PNP Switch which will very often throw Solenoid code. Too late, I had already replaced...will definitely call him next time I have need.

That is great news and it is even better when you get great service and support from a MVS sponsor as well. We need to get that type of info out there and support the companies that support us enthusiasts. Glad you go the part and at a good price.

I was thinking about this some more, and when you get bared wires like that in an awkward spot, has anyone tried the liquid plastic sealer you get for house wiring if you find a nicked or bared wire. It is flexible and should seal and support some wires especially where they get frayed near the ends.

I have used the liquid tape on the lead wire for the code boxes in engine and other things around the house. Seems to be holding.

Liquid electrical tape (not sure if that is a brand name) works great though I wouldn't use it in the house personally. I also carry either a butane soldering iron or some soldering paste, a lighter and some various heat shrink tubing. I prefer the solder paste over the soldering iron as it takes less time to perform a repair. Torch lighters are ideal for this purpose as they almost never get blown out in the blowing white stuff...
