Volvo S60 03 T5 - MAF/ETM issue? P0103

Post by Andre1991 »

Hi, newcomer here seeking some help...

I've been having some issues with my car recently:

-Backfire
-Hesitation
-RPM surge at idle
-Rpm's go really low after reving in Park, sometimes dies
-Trouble starting sometimes, only happens after the car randomly dies,
Starts up after a few trys

What I've done on my own so far is clean the throttle which was very dirty and had black gunk around the edges as-well , that did not fix the problem, actually I think it may have made it worse but I think it was just relearning. So as I don't have a code reader I went to one of the mechanics I know and they read the engine code for me and error code P0103 came up "MASS OR VOLUME AIR FLOW A CIRCUIT HIGH"

I decided to just replace the MAF since I could return it if it wasn't the problem, I replaced it and it still had issues. Now something to note on my car the MAF that's originally on there has the part number "0 280 218 108" which is for an 01 S60 T5 which was rather odd, I replaced it with the appropriate number "0 280 218 088"

Last thing I've done is disconnect the MAF for the last 3 days and the car runs good, besides some barely noticeable rpm surge which may be from the ETM... But besides that all the symptoms I've listed above are gone with the MAF disconnected.

now I did return the MAF because I want to figure out the problem before putting that kinda money in and I'd like to hear what you guys have to say, the MAF I bought and the one on the car were both BOSCH.

Thanks again

The 0280218088 was the correct MAF.

The other number is for turbo cars 1999 to 2001 fitted with the troublesome Magnetti throttle so someone saved a few dollars as the 0280218108 are usually much cheaper. I just bought 2 of them in a Bosch OEM for $64.49 each from Amazon.

Did you try a battery disconnect once the new MAF was fitted so it could relearn all the fuel mixture parameters?

No, I didn't know you had to do that with the MAF I thought that only applied when cleaning or replacing the ETM, I'll get it back and let you know thanks.

I've had my MAF disconnected since the day I made this post and the car runs fine, once I connected the MAF to see what would happen it ran like crap... So I'm guessing my ETM should be fine since it runs great with the MAF disconnected?

The test for MAF is that it flows around 12.5kg/hr when viewed in live settings with A/C off.

Any lower than this and you should look for air leaks in the piping to throttle (especially at the band clamp) and elsewhere.

If you get a higher reading you can assume a faulty MAF.

Funny you have mentioned that... I do not know the proper name for this part but the hose that connects to the radiator(I believe) then to the throttle( also has a tiny hose in the middle of the hose that connects to the engine bay)

The end of the hose where the clamp goes on has more then slightly ripped when I was removing it to clean the throttle last week, I just put some duct tape around it for now and plan on replacing it soon.

I still haven't received the MAF and will let you know what happens when I do. Thanks for the helpful information again.

As Steve would say 10 points deducted for withholding information :D

When you fully remove the air cleaner from its location dip your head down into its cavity and try to view that clamp and whether it has crimped the hose again.
