bad odometer

I just BOught a sweet '89 240 DL. The speedo works but the odometer and the trip odometer do not.

Any chance it is fixable within the mechanism? Or should I look for one in the junkyard?

Probably the odometer gear wheel is stripped, a common fault most often caused by people resetting the trip whilst the vehicle is moving. The parts to repair this are available from, among others, FCPgroton.

Buying a unit from a scrapyard may be cheaper and certainly less work but how would you know that it was not suffering the same problem?
