Hello all,

I am interested in a 2010 S40 that is going to need a new transmission because it slips.
What do you guys think it would cost to get it rebuilt or replaced?
The car has 126K miles on it.
I am planning to get it if I get a good deal.
Thanks in advance.

Replacing the transmission in these cars is a huge deal. I would try to drain and fill with new (correct) fluid first before venturing down that path. Also, hardly no one is capable of rebuilding them unless it's just a solenoid issue. In that case someone here has done it successfully- still an ordeal but not as bad as the alternative. Look at the post on the first page regarding this. If you need help with draining and filling the transmission, post back...it should be done incrementally- drain all that comes out and replace with the same amount of fluid...do this every 2-500 miles until all is new...some say that a flush is okay and it might be but I'd err on the more conservative side of drain and fill. Of course, not being your car, you might not be able to convince the owner to do this before the sale so you might be chancing things by buying it. A slipping transmission might not be the end of the life for it though... I would be much more worried of clunking and not going into gear... just my 2cents worth.
