2000 S70 - Transmission Issues after 7 miles

Post by Yimmyayo »

Hi All,

New to the forum and have just bought my first Volvo.

I have an Automatic 2000 s70, 5 Cylinder non-turbo. It currently had 108,000 miles on it and is in great shape.

However after about 7 miles of city driving it really delays and kicks between 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear shifts both up and down. It's great for the first 7 miles if driven cautiously, but feels like it's going to tear apart around the 10-15 mile mark depending on traffic.

Wondering what this could be since the the shop that serviced it said there was nothing showing problems. I had a transmission service and had the Auto Trans update kit checked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kindest,

James

How did they 'service' the transmission. Many shops don't know how to do oil changes on old Volvo transmissions. They power flush them and within a few miles the trans go out as the power flush loosened all the old hard oil off the trans walls and straight into the solenoids shutting down the trans.

On the other side of things if they never changed the oil, it sounds like it needs a good oil change. Check on MVS on how to do this if you want to do it yourself.

Check the fluid. It should be a pinkish red. If it's black or dark, go ahead and change it. There is some good instruction on here to do it through the radiator. Pump out 2 quarts, refill and continue until you see the new stuff start coming out. Pretty easy and painless, but very effective. If the fluid smells burnt, then you have problems.

Delayed/hard shifting are symptoms of the B4 servo defect. You might need to do the B4 servo update. Sometimes you can get around the B4 servo update by cleaning up the transmission or a ECU reflash to reprogram shift points and sensor tolerances. However neither one is a sure thing.

Because you don't know the history of the transmission, stay away from power flushes.
Power flushes can loosed up too much crud at one time and clog the channels of the transmission. Resulting in bigger problems then you started with.

Practical options for cleaning up the transmission.
  • Frequent drain and fills.
Low impact flush using a reservoir of ATF and a external filter connected to the transmission cooling lines.

Hi there. Just wondering what you mean by automatic trans update kit checked? Did the prior owner or person servicing it, mention whether that was a software update or the aforementioned B4 servo cover replacement? Double check that info.Another step in the process would be to check the fluid level itself to rule out low or high fluid level. Just make sure the car has been run, and leave it running in park when you check the level-and try not to burn burn your arm, the dipstick is short and its tight in there.
Always first off the line, while all the cool people are still staring at their phones.

Thank you Neil!

It was done at http://volvopitstop.com/ in Glendale, CA.

They're a Volvo specialist so I'm assuming the service was specific to the car, and he's apparently certified Volvo technician.

Thank you Rick!

I had him check the B4 Servo and he said it was looking fine, which makes me think JRL's response re; Valve Body is the real issue.

Although I will have another shop check it before I resort to a valve body replacement.

I have a feeling like this may be the issue. Any advice on expected price to fix/replace for this?

And if you're in California is there a shop you recommend?
