What if Ford had sold Volvo to... Swedes?

Post by matthew1 »

Looking back at this August 2009 post when Volvo was for sale, what if Volvo had gone/stayed Swedish?

It's difficult to criticise how things turned out. Remarkably, IMHO, Geely has taken good care of Volvo and positioned it for the wave of eco-change in the car industry - electrification, autonomous piloting, etc. Things look great for Volvo in the 2020's.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

As a Swede living in Gothenburg but not employed by VCC I've mostly seen good so far and some opportunities that wouldn't have come around with Swedish owners. A lot of large investments have been done locally even though a lot of people thought Geely would just ship everything to China at first.

Geely's CEVT (China Euro Vehicle Technology AB, maker of Lync & Co) employs a lot of people here beside Volvo and they probably wouldn't have been here without Geely.

But only time will tell what the future holds.

I've never heard a VCC-employee say anything good about the Ford era that I can recall. Most of the things I've heard are along the lines of "They tried their best to ruin our quality but we managed to keep it decent in spite of Ford". I can't recall Ford placing any other businesses here either, if they did they're gone by now. I don't have any VCC employees in the family or very close though so this is just my general impression from living here.

Big Picture - Volvo expects record sales in 2017 on China boost

STOCKHOLM--Reiterating a pledge made at the start of the year, Volvo Car Corp. said Thursday it forecasts record sales in 2017 after the Swedish auto maker posted a 23% rise in second-quarter net profit, driven by strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China.

Volvo said it outperformed the market in the Asia-Pacific region, China in particular, while in Europe it continued to see strong demand for its cars. During the first half of 2017, the company added market share in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, following healthy growth in several important markets, it said.
