Code P0350

Post by obayha »

Engine light. Second time since I have owned the '99. Code read shows p0350, something with coil pack, according to O'Reiley. The codes in this forum jump from 349 to 351. Go figure. Was it a wrong reading or is p0350 right? Please steer me in the right direction.
Thanks

Here is a thread on the subject, but having read it not sure how much help it is. P0350 in a Primary/secondary ignition circuit fault but no explanation what that means. P0351-5 are ignition coil faults by cylinder.

viewtopic.php?t=13581

Only useful part is near the bottom where a hose was loose/split, but that was on a Turbo car.

Thanks Neil,
It not showing a P0351dash number puts it in an "I don't know" place. I changed out the radiator during the Christmas break, but the code did not show up until 1-8-2018. I do have two extra coil packs and will probably switch them out over the next warm day or two.
The car seems to have a different running pattern to it then it did before the engine light. Hard to explain, but I drive this 100 miles 5 days a week and it had a moment of odd and then 5 minutes later the light was on, yet it does not sound or act like it is running on any less cylinders.

Thats the ignition coil series but weird that you get a P0350 with coil on plug ignition

The series P0351-0355 denotes missing coil signals, either permanent or intermittent fault.

I wonder if P0350 denotes a missing signal but is unable to determine correct cylinder?

Check your coils and grounds, including the M6 holdown bolt.

Check the 12VDC supply to see if it close to Battery VOtage.

P350 means too many ignition misses in a count cycle. The P350 count cycle does not track which cylinders are missing ignitions , it just counts the sum of all the cylinders. P351 - P356 counts individual cylinders ignition. P0350 is the sum of P0351-P356. These are ignition misses not misfires. Misfire mean ignition happen but the cylinder failed to fire, ignition miss means it did not even try.

ECM-3200 (P0350), Ignition coil. Faulty signal

D2800348 Condition
The control module counts the number of ignitions in all 5 cylinders during a cycle (=255). During this cycle, each cylinder should have made 51 ignitions. The control module may miss up to 50 ignitions per cylinder before a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-3200 is stored if the control module registers that more than 51 ignitions are missed.

Note: 50 ignitions per cylinder does not sound right. For a five cylinder that would be 250 out of 255. I'm pretty sure it should read 10 per cylinder. Which the total would be 40 out of 204 for a four cylinder, 50 out of 255 for a five cylinder, 60 out of 306 for a six cylinder. Code set at or above 41 for a four cylinder, 51 for a five cylinder, 61 for a six cylinder. Don't quote me on the four and six cylinder that needs to be cross checked. Rick Hale Parker.

Substitute value
  • Fuel trim disabled.
Possible source
  • Faulty signal:
    loose connections in the connectors
    defective ignition coil.
Fault symptoms
  • the engine judders occasionally
    the engine cuts out
    the engine does not start
    idling problems
    driveability problems.

Exactly analogous to

p0301-P0305 being misfire on cylinders 1-5

And P0300 is multiple misfires

I missed that you got the codes read at an auto place. What you really want in these situations is the Volvo ECM codes like Rick reported above from VIDA or a higher end scanner

work in progress. The ETM was stuck shut yesterday as I was in start up heading to see a client. Would not rev past 2000 rpm's. ETM was stuck due to varnish, That's my term for gunk, around butterfly. Within 5 miles of driving after unsticking it the engine light was off. Came back on this morning after 80 miles of driving. Back off and then back on again. I will reread Rick's post again, as it sounds a lot like what is going on with it. The motor does jutter at stops. Has been doing that for a while. Any course of action with this information is welcome.

As I read it, the code and dialog provided describe an electrical fault in the ignition circuitry, not air/fuel problem. Also, that it is wiring, not the coil failing. Tracing a ground fault sounds like a good path, or a brittle/loose connector in the coil wire spaghetti in the top of the head. I don't know how your car is, but I had to replace the coil harnesses on three different KIAs I stage-zero'ed for my kids to drive/trade-in over the past couple years.

Also double check that you didn't squish one (or more) of the wires in the harness going to the coils or have any abrasions on them from rubbing.

I did. It results in intermittent misery until fixed. Toss all those wires in new split loom if you can. The old stuff was crumbling when I was last in there. If you have some bare wire, coat it in liquid electrical tape for a quick fix.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.
