2004 S80- "boiling" sound from the engine compartm
There is a boiling sound from the engine compartment when the engine is turned off. It sounds like coolant boiling. There are no warning lights and no fluids on the ground. Is this sound normal?

Hello!
First: I am not an engineer or a very skilled mechanic so please take my advice as just that. But I do work at Volvo Torslanda Sweden! With computer systems in Volvo Cars product development.
The boiling sound you hear judging from how you describe it is normal. I have the same sound on my S70. I'ts the coolant water that bubbles. The working temperature of a modern engine I quite high, so when you turn of the ignition and the waterpump stops circulating the coolant water, the water that is near the hot part of the engine boils a little, but it mixes with the cooler water so you dont get a "serious" boiling.
On a very hot day (not very often here in Sweden), it can be a good idea to lower the engine temprature, by keeping the engine running a while after a stop. Turn of the AC for a qucker result (workload on the engine get reduced). If the engine is very hot you can otherwise get a serious boling when you stop the engine. But if the engine temp is well in the green, there is no need to worry.
If however the termostat fails it can result in that the hot water around the engine is not released out to the cooler. This is serious because both the coolant water and engine oil can start boiling. But it also easy to dectect and fix. If the enigne temp is very high or very low, this is sign of a faulty thermostat. Get it replaced.
