Extended Warranty 205 -PCV OIL TRAP AND VENTILATION

Post by leavealetter »

My Check Engine Light came on this weekend in my 2008 C70 with 126000 miles. Googling my codes of P0507 and P2187, combined with a recent new whistling sound during idle, I learned of Extended warranty 205 which repairs the ventilation hose for free if under warranty of 10 years or 120000 miles. My noise stopped when lifting my dipstick so I think I am on the right track. Since I am just over the mileage, has anyone successfully gotten a dealer to go beyond 120000 miles? If not, how expensive is this repair (in CT)? Thanks!!

I understand your symptoms indicate a bad valve in the oil trap box portion of the PCV system. I just had my 2004 S80 PCV serviced at my Volvo dealer $1,600.00. $150.00 of that was a turbo pressure pipe. The PCV system was about 6 hours labor plus parts. Though my car is a 6 cylinder I believe replacing the box is basically the same. Attached is the repair ticket. June

Actually it's completely different than an S80...that requires a breather box under the intake manifold and all related hoses to come loose and the inlets at the engine to be cleaned and most often those related hoses and breather box (or oil trap as some refer to it to be replaced. On the P1 platform the unit that holds the oil filter is integrated into the side of the engine as an intake and all that needs replacing is that connecting unit or possibly (if lucky), just the gasket. It is much less involving of a job compared to the P2 vehicles including the S80 models... The older C70 was similar to what you describe as taking 6 hours on your S80 but on the newer C70 which changed over to the P1 platform it isn't as big of a deal and is the same as the S40 and V50's. Dealers (some of them) have been known to extend "good will" to customers. Tell them that you noticed the whistling before the cut off date/miles. They might be kind to you! See if they will extend their "good will" service....call it that by name. Btw, the whistling on our P1's is a classic sign of the PCV system being clogged. This is a bit different than on the P2 models where noise like that is very infrequent and usually not noticeable....

I knew the 3.2 has the box on top and is easy compared to the 2.9. Good to know P1 cars are easier as we bought a 07 C70 for our daughter and the looming dreaded PCV system worries me with a used car. June

Thanks for sharing the follow up information. Unfortunately even though my year, model and engine potentially fell under the extended warranty, the dealer informed me that my chassis fell outside the targeted warranty and did not offer any accommodations. They also identified leakage on the timing belt so I have a few items to fix. I told them I still plan to keep my C70 until 200k miles even though Volvo apparently prefers I buy a new one after 100k+ miles.
