Post PCV Job Question

Post by callahanoffroad »

So i have a few questions/thoughts

This is on my funky 95 VVIS non-turbo 850.

I bought an all inclusive kit from IPD (they were great BTW), and of course I have left over parts, but flame trap connecting piece has got me thinking.

The socket in the intake elbow where the flame trap connects:

1: is it supposed to be removable? I couldn't get mine out

2: I am noticing I still have smoke coming out of the oil filler, and dipstick, I know this can still occur when there is a lot of "build up" in the engine. It seems to me that this little pencil sized hole is the choke point in the system. The tinkerer in me wants to bore out the hole so that the engine can suck more fumes in. I am also still getting oil leaking from the oil cap, which makes me think that crankcase/head is still pressurized.

3: I cleaned the old port and there are no oil leaks coming from it and the flame trap seems very snug in there. Is my PCV system simply not generating enough vacuum to clean all the fumes up/am i making more than normal/am I being a crazy person? hahaha :-D

I do need to get my oil changed this weekend. I wonder if that will help.

The wording of your post implies that you left the flame trap (the little disc) inside the housing? I'd throw it away, all it does is get clogged and restrict flow. Volvo stopped installing the disc in 1997, without changing the design of the housing. The disc is unimportant.

For the leaky oil cap, have you changed the rubber gasket recently? They harden and stop doing their job pretty quickly.

I apologise I thought the flame trap was the housing, not the white perforated disk inside. No I didn't install that, I do pretty thorough research before repairs (thanks MVS and Robert DIY).

I'll try flipping the gasket and see if it gets any better.

You don't feel how bad the gasket has gotten until you put a new one on. They are so thick that they will flatten before they start cracking sometimes.

Okay so, 100 props to you Erik, checked the gasket on the Oil cap. Totally Shot. IPD had sent me one with the kit now i'm golden.

I also checked that "flame trap" housing and it is leaking oil out of the bottom. So obviously its not tight enough. I'll have to figure out a way to either replace the receptor/locking mechanism or glue it into place.

On the flame trap housing, one of my cars I ended up cleaning it up then surrounding all of the seams with RTV. Finally stopped it from leaking and if I ever need to get it apart again I can peel off the RTV.

I have not, I'm going to pull the intake tube, clean up the port where the flame trap housing connects and try to seal it together with some sealant. Then I'll run a glove test. :-) I'll report back with results tomorrow.

Just wanted to close this thread by saying that the seal on the flame trap housing was my leak. I sealed it similar to the way Erik suggested above and now no more smokey dipstick. Glove test comes back with vacuum. Thanks guys for your input. Next time I change the pcv I'll replace the air intake assembly as well. :-)

Oh and switching out the gasket on the oil cap worked like a dream as well. Hopefully the car will eat less oil now. :-)
