The sound is like a hollow clanking, that isn't erratic, but steady when it occurs, and can be gently felt up the steering column in the steering wheel
The sound in question occurs when :
(Once) Idling, with and without the clutch engaged,
(Frequently) Turning while accelerator's on in 2-3rd gear,
(Frequentlly) On the dis- and re-engagement of clutch to change gears,
(Reliably) Briefly on startup and shut down.
The volvo is manual transmission, and has been running on dead struts, engine mounts and shocks for way too long (I've been procrastinating its repair
EDIT: I thought it could be the CV joints (The boots around those have long gone, and are due for replacement, too!) but the sound also occurred when I was idling still in traffic, wheels stationary :/
I've heard it off and on for nearly the past year, but recently it's gotten very bad very quick, and I don't know if I can make the 3hr drive back to where I'd like to repair it, without a proper diagnosis of if it's safe enough to do so
Any ideas? I'm hoping this is obvious from the description to someone more mechanically educated, but if not I can take an audio recording and post it, too, if it would help!
