Sound Diagnosis, hollow clanking [Volvo 850]

Post by ToriWhite »

Ok, I'm no car expert, and it's only by the skin of my teeth, borrowed tools from work and the help of this forum I've been able to keep my car (more or less) running.

The sound is like a hollow clanking, that isn't erratic, but steady when it occurs, and can be gently felt up the steering column in the steering wheel

The sound in question occurs when :
(Once) Idling, with and without the clutch engaged,
(Frequently) Turning while accelerator's on in 2-3rd gear,
(Frequentlly) On the dis- and re-engagement of clutch to change gears,
(Reliably) Briefly on startup and shut down.

The volvo is manual transmission, and has been running on dead struts, engine mounts and shocks for way too long (I've been procrastinating its repair :? ), so maybe it's a show of the engines' wear, a misaligned/misfiring cylinder?

EDIT: I thought it could be the CV joints (The boots around those have long gone, and are due for replacement, too!) but the sound also occurred when I was idling still in traffic, wheels stationary :/

I've heard it off and on for nearly the past year, but recently it's gotten very bad very quick, and I don't know if I can make the 3hr drive back to where I'd like to repair it, without a proper diagnosis of if it's safe enough to do so

Any ideas? I'm hoping this is obvious from the description to someone more mechanically educated, but if not I can take an audio recording and post it, too, if it would help!

I've been reading some other articles that suggest it has to do with the struts? I know my struts are shot, but would that be the case?

I've attached pictures of my struts

The spring seat of strut is most likely torn. This causes a hollow clunking.

As above, the spring seat in the first picture is broken. Second one will soon follow. Only Sachs brand from Fcp, Ipd, etc

Can you record and post a video of the clanking? The fact it happens when the car is stationary is unlikely to be the struts contributing to this.

IT could well be your engine mounts are failed. Check the top and lower torque mounts if they are failed they can allow the engine to vibrate metal on metal, as can the mount under the RHS of the engine by the crank pulley.

Be warned, the condition of your top shock mounts can allow the strut to eventually punch through and damage the hood in the condition you show. I would not personally drive a car in that condition. If the CV boots have long failed they are probably past saving which is a shame as Volvo OE drive axles are nearly indestructible as long as dirt does not get into them. Replacements of aftermarket stuff is a crap shoot.

:( Shame to hear about the cv joints! Truely shows its better to take care of your parts now than to replace them later.. lesson learned!

If it were to rip through, as you suggest, would it still be 'drivable', or require towing? I have to make a 2.5-3 hr trip to get to make any repairs conveniently, but if its not safe to drive, I might plea to have my friend bring their tools up here

I'll record a video soon, please check back later this evening!

According to Roadkill, yes it's still "driveable", but I don't use Roadkill for mechanical advise. Get it towed. If that strut was to completely fail at speed, it will result in a loss of control and potentially a crash. I'm impressed you're still driving it at all. +1 Volvo

If there was slight cracking in the top mounts it would probably be safe to run. But based on your pictures I would not recommend it mostly on the safety side of things if it were to fail it could easily become dangerous.

If there are any good parts yards around maybe you can find a decent set of front struts. Still check the top strut mounts as they can be hard to see without removing the top washer. you are looking for cracking around the center bonded in metal sleeve that fits around the strut shaft.

Im hoping to replace the struts, but I'm seeing that the entire assembly is upwards of $300 each!

Without my knowledge of volvo's, I hope I'm overlooking something- is it necessary to replace the actual spring? I'd much prefer to spend $300 on two new struts and compress my old springs back in.. Is it the springs that have gone bad, or the strut? Is there a way I could diagnose which is which? Or should I just bite the bullet and replace it all?

Your springs and shocks may well be okay. If so you can replace only the spring seats and possibly the top mounts as well.

Don't cheap out on these parts, if you're going to keep the car running for a while.
