Hey guys, first post please be kind.
Purchased my first Volvo the other day 04’ s40 1.9l. Car runs great but the past few mornings the first time I start it will turn over, run and dies quickly. Through other research here is what I have done:
-attempt first start with maf connected: car dies
-disconnect maf and start the motor: runs rough for longer than before but still dies.
-usually the second time I start the motor WITHOUF the maf connected it will run rough for long enough for me to connect the MAF and let it idle for a bit and everything is smooth sailing from there.
I’m at a loss, please any help.
Proud new Vo owner, possible maf sensor problem

I'd first look for vacuum leaks.
Take a close look around the throttle body and IAC valve.
Probably wouldn't hurt to clean the MAF, TB and IAC before changing anything.
At least it's easy to check/clean those before spending any $.
Since the car is new to you, you may want to check the fuel pressure, spark plugs, coils (visual check) and wires too.
How many miles?
Has it been maintained? Know the history?
Codes? The CEL is working, right?

120k miles, I know little of the history. Timing belt change 40k miles ago, seems to run fine just the first start after sitting is when it acts up. The CEL was not working , waiting on a new cluster. At a buddies shop is shows the MAF code but i would assume that is from me unplugging it each start.
I am having a code p0017 coming up also.
It looks like someone has messed with the air box and battery i. the past, all looks new including battery mount. I ended up just taking the air box out, and noticed 2 of the 4 clips that keep the air filter box closed are missing. I am going to make sure everything is sealed and cleaned before I go any further.
I am not familiar with an IAC, where and how should it be cleaned?

You didn't mention codes in your first post.
P0017...

Since you don't know the history, perhaps the timing belt wasn't changed 40K ago?
Like maybe it was done incorrectly just before you bought the car? Just saying that's a possibility.
It would make sense to pull the engine covers and check that the timing marks are aligned correctly.
